Do you mean WILL 16gb of ram be supported? Which is no it won't, 8gb max for the best cpu (i7 940xm)

Most likely it will cost more then what it is worth, and a g4400 even is better then the best cpu for that laptop, and has a better igpu then that quadro card.

It comes with a 2520m which has a RAM limit of 16GB. I might have messed up on the socket

I would stay with the i5(2520m), since it will run cooler than i7's while having slightly clocks(low power mode and non-boost) and it will use less power(giving you a longer battery life and shorter charge time).

You could get the both extended battery packs as well. I own an original with the i7 and GPU. I decked it out almost completely because it was one of my first computers and favorite. Mostly the ram and storage later on.

You could upgrade the dual core to a quad core i7. But cooling would be very poor as it wasn't designed for it.

One of the best laptops of all time deserves a screen upgrade. the stock screen is so bad. You can upgrade to an 1600 x 900 panel. There's guides online. Also grab a 2820QM. Getting a 2960XM is too much. You can grab 16gb 1600 CL9 ram. SSDs galore cause ports galore. It'll be faster than the modern day ultrabook.

Laptop Main

(Retired) Zbook 15: i7-6820HQ, M2000M, 32gb, 512gb SSD + 2tb HDD, 4k Dreamcolor

(Retired) T560: i7-6600U, HD520, 16gb, 512gb SSD, 1620p

well I own the T420s in a fully decked out version. i7 2640m, 16gb of ram, 256gb samsung SSD, 900p screen and NVS4200m. Wonderful machine :)

The things I would do to the T420:

  • Clean it really well
  • upgrade to a quad core
  • get a 900p screen if you have the 768p
  • Get a SSD

I mean the T420 goes for less than the T420s, espesically if you look at the quadro version of the T420s. I would say the value of the laptop if it is in great shape, then 350'ish.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Feel free to pm me if you have a question for me or quote me. If you want to hear what I have to say about something just tag me.

I am looking around 150 to 250$ USD, and do you know if you get it WITHOUT the NVS 4200m , could you get one for it?

The NVS4200m needs to be preinstalled.

Thank you, so, I think the best I can get is a RAID 2 SSD config, 1GB VRAM, 2.8-3.5 GHZ Quad Core 8 thread CPU and 16GB RAM with a 900p screen?

Not too bad, should hold me out the next few years (if i put in a few more hundred)
Im only 13 so these upgrade might be a while apart since I have no steady income. Still mostly to being able to afford the laptop it self (like 20 bucks away)

Wait, looking at the ARK there are no quad cores for the PPGA988 socket

A 2820QM should work just fine.

This is with a 2720QM

It should work just fine.

Also Raid 2 means that you have taken the CD slot out and replaced it with a 2.5" hard drive cage

yea, also, do you know the cheapest quad core? The 3940xm works on the same socket, would it work? And it looks like they abandoned it with the 4th gen.
So I can get an intel HD 4000 chip on the socket, but are the 3rd gen quad core i7's any better than 2nd gen quad cores?

don't jump gens and don't put a too powerful CPU in it, it doesn't have a good enough cooling system for basically anything above a 2820QM. One guy in that thread has his 2720QM running at 99c under max load, but that is most likely because he fucked a bit up. One of my friends also has a T420s (the slim verion) he has a 2820QM in it, but he gets high temps when he fires up blender
