So I want to build a NAS that will also do plex transcoding on the FreeNAS side, and then also run a Windows 10 gaming rig. So what is the easiest way to do this while losing as little power as possible? I will be using a 6850k and most likely a fury, but will I need a second GPU for the FreeNAS side? If I have to split up the cores, then I would give 2 to plex and 4 to windows, but is it possible to dynamically scale? Thank you for your help.

WHy not just run windows 10, use storage spaces for the drives, and install plex media server. No need for freenas or vms.

Thats not how cores work, you can give the vm all the cores,a nd they onley use what they need.

Id get a 6800k, you don't need the extra lans.

trying to virtualize both of these on one system "two gamers" style is such a waste of time and resources you honestly just shouldnt.

either house your storage under windows, or build two seperate systems.

Not to mention FreeNAS REALLLLLY doesn't like (running in a VM) not being able to physically manage the drive(s).

not to mention that stuff like unraid is essentially also a competitor for freenas as well :P

but seriously, keep your file storage on a seperate box if you have the budget, and when you're talking 6850k you clearly do... :D

on that note, @shortsyoungster what would be your budget for this party, eventual size and/or sound requirements, and eventual parts you already own?

The only way to run freenas in a vm right is hba passthrough.

I dont' think freebsd(what freenas is based off) supports vt-d in vms(nor does it support vms well).

Ya it's a great deal, so if I were to uses unraid rather than freeNAS what are some of the pros and cons?

Id personally install windows on the hardware and do all the file stuff in windows as well as gaming and normal use. VM's aren't worth the hassle for your use.

If you want to do vm(dont) id install anouther linux distro like centos or debian. Then you can do all the vms with kvm and virt manager(same software as unraid). Don't run freenas in a vm for your use, just do it on centos or debian.

Just to add my two cents on the matter, I really wouldn't want to run my server on something which is comparatively unstable/unreliable (i.e. a personal gaming computer) at all.

If your just storing files it will be fine. For most people it not worth the extra until if you can just add a drive or two to their main system.

I second (third?) just using Windows to do everything you want.

FreeNAS doesn't offer a way via the GUI to pass a monitor/graphics-card through to a VM so that you can sit there and use it to game. In the future FreeNAS 10 will be using bhyve which may give you more flexibility. Ultimately FreeNAS is a NAS first.

Is there a specific feature within FreeNAS that you want?

You can use ZFS or btrfs within linux, install KVM, and do what you want. This will give you the same capabilities as unRaid, just free and no fancy web GUI. Might be your best (and ultimate learning experience) solution. For linux i'd chose btrfs over ZFS since it's slightly more complete in the linux implementation, but both are still "new" for linux.

Or you could just do Proxmox + btrfs + Dockers/Containers, total win package right there.

Also, I miss retail edge so much. But I don't missing working at best buy ^_^ (though I do miss the people, they were a blast). My first buy from them was the Core 2 duo + motherboard for like $200, was a steal. Then I bought my i7 920, then I quit :'(.
