Hello.

My i7 4790k seems to be running a tad too hot. It's running at stock speeds, cooled with a Coolermaster 120xl water cooler, ambient temperature is around 24 degrees Celsius and it usually averages in the low 70's under load. Yesterday was a warm day but when the ambient temperature cooled down to 24 degrees (according to my digital thermometer) it managed to make it's way up past the 80 degree point. Today, i had to turn the multiplier down to 35 because it was the same story and ambient temperature was 22 degrees. I don't know why it's heating up like this and i keep finding mixed results of "Oh those temps are ok" and "That is not safe at all" ect.

My motherboard is an asus h81-gamer with everything, except for voltage at default. Could that be why?

Asus boards to tend to set the default voltage to auto, so when it boasts I found mine over 1.3v, just dial in manual at around 1.19v

Thank's for the response. Yeah, i did set the voltage to manual and put in a 1.089v and left everything else alone. i'm just not sure if A: That's the reason behind the issue. Or B: The temps are normal or not, since i read on the intel page the maximum allowed is 72 degrees and users saying 80 is fine, and others saying it's like death to the cpu

Should be fine but you will see slightly higher temps with the radiator above the GPU and pulling air from within the case out.

If it could reach, you may want to experiment with the radiator mounted on one of the front fans. Or if there's room on top, mount it there while pulling air in to the case.

Lastly, is the pump or radiator fan using PWM?

To be honest those temps are pretty much to be expected with such a high power chip and only 120mm rad space.

Low 70 under load is really not that bad.

When i get back to this PC, i'll give that a shot and let you know. Thanks. I'm not sure if the pump is on PWM actually. I'll check soon.

Yeah, true. But when it gets over 80 at low ambient room temperature with no overclock and under the usual load is like "What the hell?" lol

True. have you checked the thermal paste?

Also, did you set a custom fan curve?

(this is not related to this post, just asking for curiosity)

why do you have a H board instead of Z one having a K cpu? You had not enough money in that moment for a Z board?

Remember to quote me (or someone else), otherwise we won't going to recieve your answers...

The guy just hooked me up with a performance to price type deal. Got both for around $500-ish aus dollars lol

Tcase refers to the ihs and not core temps.

Your temps are perfectly fine.

Ok, i solved the problem!! It was the way the cooling block was mounted.... I checked again to be sure and saw the screws were crooked as F**k!! I've since taken it off, applied new compound and screwed it in better and saw a load temperature after running cinebench, intel stress test and time spy benchmark drop from over 80 degrees to 66 degrees!

Thanks to everyone for helping me out with your ideas and theories!
