Most games you buy will have a key and a disc with the game build on it if you get a retail copy. 9/10 you put the kley into your account (steam.origin/uplay etc) and it'll download a newer build of the game anyway. Day 1 patches are necessary buy oh so fucking annoying when that happens.

I still use an optical drive, but thts because I still have to burn cd's for clients and as a passthrough drive for a couple of vm's for legacvy software. If you want to buy one either look for a usb external drive (3.0 for bluray) or buy a bluray multi (dvd burner, bluray reader) from a reputable brand they're is rarely any quality difference with these devices, so look for one from ,song.lg,samsung, pioneer, asus, with my preference being lg as they usually look pretty slick and I haven't had an issue with an lg odd in 20 odd years.

Though most users decided to forgo a odd as it's very rarely used by most unless your watching a movie. bootable usb sticks took away the need for one for os installation and they seem to slowly becoming extinct out

So i'm going to build a pc soon, i was wondering what brand of optical drive should i get, and please kindly consider using pc part picker to choose and post it so i can check it.

You're in a minority if you buy games in disc form. Steam is superior tbh

Well in my opinion it's a waste to buy an optical drive, but do what you want if it's for a school project

Just get any brand drive, I've never had any modern drives fail. Sure, they can get damaged, but that was in a computer somebody dropped. Just get anything that meets your needs and you can afford, if you need one.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

If you don't care about blu-ray, get the cheapest one there is.

There's really nothing different between them performance wise so just get the cheapest one :P

I've been doing this for years and never had any issues.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

Even though you can still buy certain PC games in boxes on store shelves today, those copies still have to be registered on Steam/Origin/Uplay/Battle.net. Those services are usually not optional for the products released on them, they are DRM and you have to go through them. That being the case, physical installation media seems redundant and I doubt installing from a disc is still required. It may not even be possible, those boxes might hold little more than a card with a key code printed on it.

If you need a CD/DVD reader/burner anyway, just get whatever LG/Samsung/Asus/whatever drive you can find cheapest. If you need Blu-ray support, that is quite a bit more expensive.
