I was playing a game(Ark Survival Evolved if it matters) and I was started to get much lower than normal FPS. I didn't hear my fans running so I opened up my GPU software and found that the card was hovering around 95 C. I know I was getting lower frame rates because the card was down clocking to save itself, but I can't understand why the card isn't smart enough to turn the fan speed up on its own? I know the fans work, I have them running at about 50% speed with the software now which keeps it around 60 C w, but why wasn't it doing that automatically? Why would it thermal throttle instead of turning on the fans and has anyone else had this issue?

IIRC there are different presets for the fans. Some favor noise over performance, allowing the card to throttle instead of increasing its fan speeds, others are balanced and some ramp the fans up to 90-100 to get best temps/ocs. Either way its normally best to set your own curve that suits what you want from your card and it sounds like you're already starting to do that.

there's no presets where the gpu will thermal throttle ;)

Ya, I made a fan curve that I like already and I've been using it for a few months. I know how to use the software and everything, but I forgot to open it to apply the preset that I made, I just can't figure out why the card would be allowed to reach those temps if I don't apply the settings myself.

Exactly, the preset that the card uses without opening the software shouldn't allow temps to be reached where it will thermal throttle. Also, it's not a dust or airflow issue, I dust the card and pc every other week and the cooling solution that the strix has isn't as prone to dust as blower fans are.

that i can confirm, my strix is one of the easiest cards to keep clean.

PS: also, i'm gonna rant at everyone who's gonna yammer about strix coolers.

which strix cooler? how many of them have you tested? how much experience do you have with the strix 1070? in what scenarios did you do testing to conclude all strix cards must be generally bad? etc...

i have 1 and only 1 and it's a 980ti which is a huge ass papa chip as compared to a little 1070 baby boy so it output a decent amount of heat which is good to put a cooling solution to it's pace...my card has a dual 8pin pcie for power and it run very hot and the card is really loud it's a bad version of the 980ti.

the 980ti, you have no clue about the 1070 so shut the full cup and actually help OP out instead of ranting about how *ALL of these cards i never used are bad*.

pretty much every manufacturer redesigned their cooler for the 10 series, there is *LITERALLY* no connection in cooler design between the 900 series and 10 series except for the name on the box.

EDIT: and i've given you a fairly decent dose before, i dont do second rounds very often.

are you REALLY gonna go that way? please at least be somewhat helpful or get out...

and AI tweaker isnt necessarily bad, it just has some.. issues..

i actually use AI tweaker for my cpu and case fans, mostly trough manually editing the config files, but once that was done it actually works surprisingly well :D

i use the amazing UEFI on my MSI gaming motherboard to control my fans and it's a lot better you set it up once, take 30 seconds and it works fine forever after that ;)

i'm sorry to bash your dreams, but i kinda had some more complex requirements than what your UEFI is capable of

and it is also kinda very difficult to tweak fan speeds accurately during stress tests if that requires rebooting into UEFI for every tweak ;)

or rather, when you dont give a shit about perfecting airflow you do not face such problems.

i prefer to have my mobo VRMs at a comfortable temperature while my processor is running on low fan RPM on a tower cooler ;)

i know very much what i'm doing, and if you would too you wouldnt be here ranting about how horrible a product you've never used is.

I use Asus's GPU Tweak II because I hated MSI afterburner so much. I don't understant why people don't like GPU Tweak II, it's always been accurate with other programs, great breakdown and monitoring of the card, and it allows me to control the RGB on the strix.
