So for a while now I thought I had 15/5 Mbps internet connectivity at my house, but it turns out we're supposed to have 50/5 Mbps. Why would TWC stick us with an old modem that can't handle the speeds we are paying for? BTW, our new modem is in the post. It should arrive tomorrow.

I get what you are saying, but on the phone I'm told that are modem was outdated and we should have gotten a new one that would support higher speeds. We have NEVER seen speeds higher than 15/5 Mbps. Why would they do that?

internet providers pay for the amount of data that is being used so if they limit you. they essentially pay less. that is why all the packages offer no more then 5mb uploads. they do this so that you cant run a server which in turn uses up data traffic which then costs them more money. its a cost saving measure that all companies do.

Ha ha. I like the part about not being able to run a server. I run one just fine off it surprisingly. I could care less about the up speeds, it's the download speeds that annoy me. We're paying for more then the modem can handle?!

im not referring to a simple little home server like plex that will be used by maybe one person. im referring to multi user based servers like websites as well as some game servers that use upload. twc as well as any most others limit upload so you cannot do any of that. also a home server typically doesnt even hit your connection in terms of uploads as long as your on the same network. ie streaming from your pc to your phone from your wifi.

also i kinda doubt thats the case. even old ass routes can do 15mbs.... its probably more along the connectiuons in your area that are limiting your internet

My server is a Windows Server 2012 R2 machine that is indeed on the internet, not only online. I have a DDNS server running for my home IP address which the router then forwards to the server and back again. Multiple users access it at any given time.

Did you just recently get the old router? If so then its a screwup on TWC's part but if you've been with them for a while they might not have fully rolled out the new modems to everyone even though you now have faster speeds. With Google Fiber and ATT Fiber coming into a lot of places TWC has been bumping up peoples plans by as much as 6X. I was on the 50/5 plan and about a year-ish ago I got bumped up to 300/20 for free because of Google Fiber coming to the area. The problem was they bumped it up before sending out new modems to people.

No, we've had this modem for a few years, and apparently TWC upgraded the service automatically to everyone in the area. But that happened early 2016, so almost a year ago.

Ah, that sounds about right. They are pretty slow in actually getting you what you need, lol. I had to call and ask for the 300/20 even though I was supposed to be upgraded to it automatically.

You will probably get your normal speeds with your own modem. I got a mew modem a few months ago. I pay for 300Mbps, and actually get 400.

Yeah, I just got my new modem today and it turned out to be a modem/router combo from Arris. It's not bad actually. We pay for 50/5 and get about 53/6. Soon, in a few weeks, we'll be getting a boost to 100/?. I don't know the upload speed yet.

Sounds good. Not as good as my though. There we have unlimited access to 400/200. BTW, I saw that you have the Acer H236HL BID monitor. Do you like it?

Just saying, this is my speed. Note: Not a perfect network condition. I actually get 200/20 all the time. PS: My account with TWC is so old, it dates back to when Adelphia Cable existed. The account has been through 2 cable company acquisitions :D. That being said, I do get perks other don't. I only pay $34.99 for my Internet service, and that's not a promo.

Back on topic: Since it sounds like you lease your modem from TWC (Now Spectrum), you should have gotten notices either by mail or by phone to come to a local office to swap your modem in. It sounds like you were still on an old DOCSIS 2.0 modem. TWC wont force you to swap your modem. If they tried contacting you but never actually paid attention then its your fault.

Side note: I don't lease my modems. I buy them for myself, currently on an Motorola SB6141. It costs more upfront, but after about a year you save money. I have my modem paired with an EA7500 and its awesome on my end.

And since you asked about higher speed tiers: They offer up to 300/30 to residential accounts which have had the MAXX rollout.

I never got any sort of notification, phone call, email, letter or whatever about needing to change modems, which I would have happily done. We just got the new modem yesterday, and are now getting the speeds we are paying for, 50/5. I was getting on average about 53/6, so not too bad. It turned out to be a modem/router combo, which I normally wouldn't have even considered using for a router, but it actually works better than the old Netgear WNDR3400v3 that we were using for quite some time.

Basically, someone made a mistake. It happens. TWC wasn't intentionally trying to fuck you (Though they may do that in other ways, being TWC lol). When your speed got upgraded or installed, they simply didn't send you the proper upgraded modem.

As you've already contacted them, and have the correct modem on the way, I don't see any further relevance. It was a simple mix-up, not a conspiracy.
