I am currently getting annoyed by Windows 10 and a bunch of crap with it; cortana, edge, etc. I am not sure if I should stick with Windows 10 or if I should switch to Ubuntu 14.04.

PC Specs:

  • i5-6600k(4.4 GHz overclock)
  • RX 480 8GB (planning to crossfire)
  • 16 GB DDR4 2400 MHz

Programs I require to run:

  • Eclipse (supports Linux)
  • Minecraft (supports Linux)
  • FileZilla (supports Linux)
  • Chrome (supports Linux)
  • Skype (supports Linux)
  • Photoshop (I plan to use WINE)
  • A few Steam games

Now, is it better to stick to Windows 10 for gaming and all that stuff or switch to Linux where I can better optimize it and secure it.

Honestly, as a Win 10 and Ubuntu user, Ubuntu is not a good alternative to Windows for most users, and never was.

When it comes to security, the only advantage desktop Linux has is that it's user base is significantly smaller than that of Windows, making it a target that isn't really worth targeting (Same with OSX).

Linux is also apparently having issues with AMD drivers.

Photoshop doesn't mix well with Wine in my experience. It'd be better to switch to Gimp if you convert to Linux.

Of course, what you could do is edit the registry to disable Cortana and Edge, or get Win 10 Pro and use the group policy editor. Or just buy an older version of Windows.

if you want windows 10 with out any of that and no feature updates, you can get windows 10 ltsb. Its basically like updated windows 7, but you can only get it in VL, so call them up for a key.

Id personally run linux, because i like it more, but id suggest to install it, and force your self to use it for a week. If you hate it , just restore a image, or boot back to your windwos drive.

Some things to consider; you can optimize and secure windows with the same amount of effort as securing linux. Ubuntu in its default state is no more secure than windows. Photoshop might not run well under wine, last time I used wine was to play left4dead breakages ocour when upgrading. I'm typing this from Ubuntu 16.04 where all the games I play work well except FTL sometimes crashes. I use linux because its Unix like and so is much easier for programming embedded systems. For the reasons you mentioned above i would not switch

I currently have it, so your point is invalid.

I know how to disable it, but I am getting tired of making changes to fix things with Windows. I haven't heard about the drivers, so I'll stick to Windows until they're fix.

That's nice to know.

I was thinking of doing that except I don't want to put in the effort of changing it back and forth.

Then consider an upgrade to Win 10 Pro. I've had 0 issues that were due to Win 10 Pro (Every issue was either a bad driver, the 470 and 1070 fighting for my love, or bad/outdated hardware).

I currently run Linux on my desktop(i7, GTX 780) and on my laptop(XPS 13) with no issues. Both machines also have a Windows 10 partition that I use rarely. Linux is fully useable as a desktop OS, and I much prefer it over Windows. I would say at least give it a shot by installing it on a separate drive or partition. Once you get used to the way things work on Linux, it is hard to go back to Windows.

I prefer Linux. Windows is a product vs. Linux is a project.

I have had more driver issues in Windows than I ever had in linux. I've also never had any malware, adware or anything on Linux. I don't need to install Anti virus, Anti Rootkit, Anti Ransomware, Anti adware and all that krap that slows your PC down.

Yeah it is. I removed Kubuntu from my system because the latest versions (16.04+) don't support the AMD driver for my card, I was stuck with the open source driver and that caused odd kwin issues and crashes for me.

Shame, I wanted to run a dual boot on the Ryzen/Vega build I'd have once it all got released.
