Combining two idendical computers.

BEFORE YOU SAY IT: I did look this up. I found nothing helpful, because people have no idea what they're talking about.

My friend has two of the same computers that he got for free. They're HP machines that have a Q9400 in them. No he is not selling them.

 

How could he combine them into one computer?

 

I know it wouldn't be 2x the performance... I don't really care.

 

I know he could by a new motherboard with 2 sockets (The CPUs aren't soldered on) and put them in, but is there a way he can do it without that?

No way to make them into one.

 

THere are no dual lga 775 boards, there are dual 771 boards, but they aren't compatible.

 

You can normally move the extra ram, hdd's and gpu's over to one system.

With a bit of network mastery, he could create a cluster computer.

Alternatively, he could use them as two different systems (HTPC, NAS, Router, basic server, etc.).

He could move the HDD, CD-drive and RAM to the other system.

Maybe the GPU, but since it is a HP board, I highly doubt it.

 

There is no way to have 2 CPUs in one system without having 2 sockets.

He could buy a new board, but I don't think Q9400s support dual-socket board.

Positive thinking. I would go with the latter suggestion though ?

For normal use a cluser won't help.

 

You can make the other one a nas, but might aswell just put the drive in the first one.

 

For a router install pfsense or untangle and get a network cards(vlans are a pain.)

Clusters don't run on windows. They run on linux and the way things are processed is not the same. Use Rocks of beuwolf and don't expect to play GTA V or CSGO.

Tinkernut did a video on how to create a cluster computer with 5 Raspberry Pi's, and it applies to other systems as well.

But it's not worth it. It's a pain in the ass to set up and there aren't many uses that justify a cluster computer.
