Which CPU?

mathn

hi,

i'm planning a new build but i don't know which CPU to choose.

The 6800K or the 6700K.. 'Cause it's a build i want to be strong enough for a couple of years.

So will more cores like the 6800K be more future-proof?

Or the 6700K because they will use the same socket for the upcomming CPU's so i can upgrade later (and as far as i know they will stop the 2011v3 socket)?

What i want to do with this computer is playing games and programming stuff.

the i7 6700k will be plenty if all you do is gaming. Considering that i7 2600k's are still perfectly usable to gaming you should be more concerned about your graphics card choice.

Personal build >  New-ish AMD main gaming setup

i think what he meant with a couple of years is like 10 years as i7 6800k will stay great through all ages

well if you REALLY want to keep it that long, and you believe you need those cores/threads, go for it. but I don't think you'll really improve over the i7 6700k. it might even be a downgrade unless what you're doing uses those extra cores. I think some upcoming games are being coded for more cores/threads because of ZEN so it might pay off, but its kind of doubtful.

well thanks for the fast answers! i have to say 10 years is very long, i see it 5-6years max, just don't want to buy a new pc within 2-3years. If it would be like that i buy myself an i5 6600K to throw away within 2-3 years.

Can you wait? Kabylake is right around the corner for Intel and of course AMD has their Zen processors debuting early next year, so if possible I'd hold off and see what those two techs have to offer. But if you can't wait, I'd shoot for the 6700k...it's good tech for the needs you listed. There is a grain of truth to the thought that as time progresses it's certainly possible games will take advantage of more cores, but by the time that becomes mainstream you'll be upgrading anyway.

TL;DR

Wait for Kabylake or pull the trigger on the 6700k now

Personally me, I would go for the more budget one so then you can spend the remaining money on accessories like better fans, rgb strips ect. I personally wouldn't buy a core i7 just for gaming. I am a budget person who only spent about $600 aud on my pc but yeah, you do what you want I would go with what ever one is cheaper.

sorry if this didn't help. Kayotics

You're putting your budget on the wrong things.

CPU: Intel i5-4590 | Motherboard: Asus H97M-E | GPU: Sapphire Nitro R9 390 | RAM: 2x4Gb Kingston HyperX Fury Black | SSD: Sandisk Plus 240Gb HDD: Seagate 250Gb  | PSU: Seasonic G650 80+ Gold | Case: NZXT S340

I am who I am.

The difference between the Kaby Lake and Skylake is very small in real world performance, you won't be losing much, don't go wit hthe i5 if you do want it to last 5 years, it's like mentioned the 2600k is still up-to-date and it's much older cpu.

the 6800k would be overkill that is more for intensive cpu workloads like geography work etc, for high end gaming and even great multi-tasking the 6700k will be enough even if you want to game at 4k, just make sure you go for a matching GPU for the maximum performance like the GTX 1070/1080.
