Zen?

What do you guys think of the new Zen architecture from AMD ? You think AMD is going to hit it out of the park or do you think it will be another bulldozer flop?

I hope for AMD's sake that they're going to give what we want/hope/expect with Zen, just so there's maybe even a little bit of competition between them and Intel.

But I'm doubtful.

Nope, nothing.

It is on AMD's website but there isnt a ton of information on it yet but we do know that is it a 14nm process and they are offering 4-32 core models with multi threading support!

oftenly AMD doesn't promise more than what they release, it's the rumors and fake hype that disappoints everyone

As I said before.....zen is currently 0 core at 0ghz. meaning we have no sweet clue...... I guess more like X cores at X ghz but still..... I suspect it will be very good but not Intel level.

from the benchmarks AMD said, at same clock they have a very slightly better IPC than Broadwell-e (or broadwell) but probably lower than skylake... if that's what they have, they could become a good budget option for mainstream IF the price is competitive, which we don't know yet

I remember reading that but didn't it say at the same clock speed?

I'll have to find the video, but if I recall correctly they were both at 3GHz

I mean if I'm thinking right wouldn't it still not beat it if the both ran at stock speeds(if the zen can only go up to 3 and still be stable, the i7 6900k can run up to 3.7)

The issue is we don't know what other hardware was used for the Blender test.

Personally, I don't touch what a company says about their product, bench or no bench.

It would be great if it is, as it would be interesting to see another Intel vs AMD

There is no information at all about Zen, just chill out bro, take a chill pill. Whatever AMD says will be a painted a rosy picture to get gullible people excited about whats not out yet.

What it will be, hard to know, but type "Zen" in the forum's search box and you'll find plenty of discussion...

It can't be a Bulldozer-type flop, though, mainly because of the circumstances. Back in the day, AMD was head to head with Intel. In fact, it surpassed Intel's mainstream CPUs with Phenom II, although Intel got its enthusiast first gen "core i" to compensate. Everybody was announcing a significant leap through new architectures, but in the end Sandy Bridge delivered while Bulldozer didn't: multithreading wasn't as important as it is today, and Bulldozer didn't seem a clear improvement from Phenom II in the fronts that mattered in 2011. Both the lack of a significant jump and the difference with Sandy Bridge explain the massive disappointment.

In contrast, today only AMD is launching a truly new architecture, while Intel is iterating what it has. Hence, there won't be a comparison in terms of improvement (if someone misleadingly try to compare FX-Zen to Skylake-Kaby Lake non-existent gains, that would even help AMD). Moreover, AMD is no longer on par with Intel, hence it can simultaneously be a large improvement over its current CPUs while remaining below the best Intel has. All in all, expectations are lower (yes, despite the hype, we still don't give them any chance of coming up with the new king, as we could do before Bulldozer), and improving over Excavator seems granted, so it can hardly be as big of a disappointment. It would have to be a very marginal improvement to match what happened then, and it would still lack the "coming from Phenom II" factor. Worst case scenario they'll just become stronger at the lower end, although that would be terrible financially.

Not really, but what worries me in this video is that AMD said "comparable settings" not identical settings... tweaking them to make one run better is easy...
