AMD GPU Life Expectancy?

From a simple "lifetime of hardware" point of view, I'd like to point you to the many and varied YouTube tech channels showing off their vintage 2000 (if not earlier) GPUs. RandomGamingInHD and Socket Sanctuary are two channels I've come to like for their focus on older equipment, and how it holds up to modern software. Long story short: a 3dfx Voodoo 2 that is damn near old enough to drink in the US, if properly maintained, would most likely fire right up today.

 

I think you're talking about driver support, in which case, yes, for a long time AMD has been regarded as doing a better job of releasing drivers that improve the performance of older parts, and NVIDIA has a reputation for releasing drivers that gimp performance of older-gen GPUs, supposedly to make you go out and buy a 1050 Ti to replace your 660. I'd say both counts there are true, although given how absolutely crap NVIDIA's drivers have been lately, I'm not sure it's intentional on their part.

So I heard AMD GPU will last generally longer than their Nvidia counter parts. Like I saw benchmarks that an old AMD card performed better than its Nvidia counter-part, and at time of release, the Nvidia card worked better. So how long generally does the AMD GPU last longer than its counter-part? Like R9 Fury vs GTX 980 since those are on par. How much longer will the R9 Fury last after the GTX 980 performance will suffer.

What do you mean? Performance of both of those companies devices remains pretty much a constant so it all depends on how the market will develop.

people say nvidia makes their old-gen cards worse on purpose, which forces people to upgrade. So if this is true, will the AMD card drivers still push farther than nvidia drivers?

 

also I saw benchmarks from Anandtech website i think on OLD GEN AMD and NVIDIA cards doing benchmarks. the AMD card either was on par with the Nvidia card or the Nvidia card got destroyed, now this brings the question to me is do AMD cards generally last longer than their AMD counter-parts, and if so, how much?

There are two ways to look at this. Nvidia gimping drivers, I believe this happens. Not to the degree people say but I can achieve almost 50mhz higher clocks on older drivers then new ones after the 1000 series came out. Then there is also the real fact of degradation. I ran my 4670K at 4.6ghz all the time. After 2 years I would have to pump a lot more voltage in it to hit 4.6ghz again. 4.4ghz was fine but 4.6ghz was unstable.

Well as history has shown, AMD cards do age better than their Nvidia counter parts.

From a simple "lifetime of hardware" point of view, I'd like to point you to the many and varied YouTube tech channels showing off their vintage 2000 (if not earlier) GPUs. RandomGamingInHD and Socket Sanctuary are two channels I've come to like for their focus on older equipment, and how it holds up to modern software. Long story short: a 3dfx Voodoo 2 that is damn near old enough to drink in the US, if properly maintained, would most likely fire right up today.

 

I think you're talking about driver support, in which case, yes, for a long time AMD has been regarded as doing a better job of releasing drivers that improve the performance of older parts, and NVIDIA has a reputation for releasing drivers that gimp performance of older-gen GPUs, supposedly to make you go out and buy a 1050 Ti to replace your 660. I'd say both counts there are true, although given how absolutely crap NVIDIA's drivers have been lately, I'm not sure it's intentional on their part.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

I still have my 9800GTX+ and the drivers have been shifted to the "legacy" class. That means no bug fixes and when the OS upgrades it will likely no longer be compatible. Although I can still use it, I only just upgraded this year when the 10 series came out, it makes a nice shelf ornament. When a card gets to 10 years old an intel will beat it, and the Intel drivers seem to be much better. Im playing games on my laptop that my old 9800GTX+ cannot play.

AMD takes awhile to properly optimize their drivers with their cards so appears as if the cards age better but in reality it's not like the physical hardware is changing. It all comes down to driver support, AMD also tends to support older cards for a longer period of time so when a new game comes out, even a card from the previous generation or the one before it gets driver optimization. Nvidia is known for ending driver support for older cards when a new generation comes out, hence why old AMD cards that are still getting  driver support start to perform better. I don't know how true the story about gimping old cards are, I have been with AMD for the last few years but if the story is true, that's some serious gray（close to black( area on Nvidia's part.

 

Personally I tend to upgrade only every few years(2-3 generations) so the company that provides longer support suits my needs.

There's two aspects to this it sounds like you might be mixing up.  One is how long the card will physically last - ie, continue to function for - and the other is for how long its level of performance will be acceptable, perhaps due to performance changes (improvements or degradations) due to things like new drivers.

 

If the performance does drop over time, it's not due to the card wearing out though.
