Windows and Linux <--> SSD + HDDs

steamOs is only one linux distro among a hundred (and not a good one IMO) so the storage requirement is only for it, steam on linux doesn't need 200GB

how much would you recommend for games? i wouldn't recommend less than a 240GB SSD

Do you think it's inconvenient to just switch between the systems for your specific tasks? I personally prefer a unique system for everything and Windows is the best for this, it's hard to just shift to a task while I'm in game. And whenever I'm in a non-Windows system like Linux or (Hackintosh), it's no where possible to play games at all.

Mobo: ASRock B150M Pro4s | CPU: Intel core i7 7700 with stock cooler | Storages: 2x80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm + Zotac 120GB | Memory: 2x4GB Kingston HyperX Fury | PSU: 400W HYN 80+ | GPU: PowerColor Radeon R9 270X 2GB | Tower: an old one from the other decade | Monitor: ASUS Widescreen 900p + ViewSonic FHD| Speaker: microlab

I've considered that, so when I'm in Windows and gaming, I'll be able to use the system for other tasks as needed; and when I'm in Linux for everything else, well, I won't be gaming. ;) I ended up getting 2 SSDs, 1 dedicated to Windows, 1 dedicated to Linux, so that resolves the question I had about partitioning 1 drive between systems. Of course, there's still booting into each, which I am not a fan of, I much prefer VMs, but the purpose I have in virtualization warrants separate boots. I am not going to run a virtualization host with several VMs on top of Windows. I will do that on top of Linux. The VMs will be Linux anyway. Windows is really just for gaming, and I can do other computing stuff while gaming if I want. Time will go into that. Time will go into Linux stuff. The Linux time will not involve gaming, so no worry about switching (there will be no switching). The only switching will be at less frequent intervals when booting into one or the other, with more time going into each on its own. I will, however, set up shares on both systems, so contents can be shared between them within a single boot.

Lmao got your point. But I really think, is it just so much better to put your Linux in a laptop, and place it right beside your desktop, on your working table?

Heck yeah it's better. haha ...but I am not budgeting multiple computers. I'm currently only able to drop the money into one. The linux laptop idea, or any laptop, that'll be for controlling server gear, remoting into a headless setup, so the laptop won't have to be powerful at all. Well, I'll probably give it good cpu+ram but that's the main muscle it'll have.

Soooo, basically, at a glance (and this is over X-number of years)...

  1. Build mostly-gaming somewhat-server computer (late 2016)
  2. Build headless dedicated server, repurpose previous into all-gaming computer (maybe 2018)
  3. Get a laptop (macbook with solid ram+cpu for coding & server management) (2018-2019)

The dedicated server, I will consider options... NUCs for OpenStack, or something else.

Budget factors into all of it. If I can have a solid IaaS for small private business purposes by 2020, I'll be happy.

In the meantime, I'm happy with mostly gaming + linux-etc-stuff. :D
