The GTX 780 Ti supports DisplayPort 1.2, which will be capable of 1080p 240 Hz. The HDMI port on it is version 1.4, which will be limited to 1080p 144 Hz or lower.

Hey guys!

I am going to buy a Benq xl2540, which is advertised as a true 240hz monitor. What cable do I need to be able to display 240hz? Does normal DVI work?

Thanks!
Jojo

DVI? nope, DP1.2 and HDMI2.0. There will be a cable with the monitor though so you don't need to worry about that.

You will mostlikely get cable bundled with your monitor.

And I am sure it will be Display Port 1.2 or higher.

Is HDMI 2.0 backwards compatible so it works on my older GPU?

Yes and no. To be able to use the full capabilities of HDMI2 both gpu and display need to have hdmi2.0 compliance.

It will work, but not at 240hz (Dont know what games you will be able to play at 240hz anyway).

HDMI is not fast enough to push 240Hz even on 1080p monitor.

It will work but you will be stuck at a lot lower refresh rate.

If you have older GPU then you must have DisplayPort as well if there is HDMI2.0 on it as well.

If you have older GPU that does not have HDMI 2.0 and not even display port then going for 240Hz monitor is a waste since you have probably too weak GPU.

Also I bet that this monitor will ONLY have Display Port.... of course it will work it is built for it!

Its fine. 600 series and 700 series have DP 1.2 which should support 1080p 240Hz as it does support 4k at 60Hz and 4k 60Hz = 4x 1080p 60Hz = 1x 1080p 240Hz.

The GTX 780 Ti supports DisplayPort 1.2, which will be capable of 1080p 240 Hz. The HDMI port on it is version 1.4, which will be limited to 1080p 144 Hz or lower.

One displayport cable is enough for 1440p 144Hz on my set up so I'd assume you can do it for 1080p240... don't quote me on that though! I'm no expert!

I have a question, is this dependent purely on the port?

Let me explain where my worries come from. GTX 780 and GTX 780 Ti both support 4K@60Hz over DP, so it has DP 1.2, correct? But here's the thing. GTX 780 can do only 1440p@120Hz max and GTX 780 Ti can do 1440p@144Hz max. But only GTX 960 and newer can do over the 1440p@144Hz. They should all have DP 1.2 I believe.

Graphics cards should be able to do any configuration that falls within the DisplayPort specification, including 1440p 144 Hz or 1080p 240 Hz for DP 1.2. Any graphics card with DisplayPort 1.2 should be able to do this. I don't believe the GTX 780 has a limit of 1440p @ 120 Hz. There can sometimes be limitations depending on the monitor, for example some FreeSync monitors like the MG279Q (1440p 144 Hz) have been reported to have a maximum of 120 Hz on NVIDIA graphics cards, but this is mainly a problem with communication between the monitor and graphics card and can generally be fixed with EDID overrides.

There can be differences between graphics cards when it comes to operating beyond spec (i.e. display overclocking) but generally it is unusual for this to come into play, and it is not a very well explored area.

You need to have at least DP version 1.2 support cable and also GPU.

Your GPU is very old and it only came with HDMI 1.3a which not able to support 240hz.

Connector won't make miracle from not support to support.
