Encrypting Portable Hard Drive

I have a portable hard drive which I use for school, and I was looking to password portect/encrypt the drive.

 

Can you do this in Windows 10, without 3rd party software?

If not, can you recommend any free software.

 

Does the software have to be installed on every machine accessing the encrypted drive, or only one machine, which is the one to first encrypt it?

you can decrypt the drive with a batch on the drive.

it can e installed on the drive

veracrypt creates an encrypted  volumee that shows up on drive as any other file.

or you could install win 7 ult or 10 ent to vm and use bitlocker

You can do it with 8+ pro as well.

Unless you're using that drive for government or enterprise use, bitlocker should be perfectly fine.
