I'm starting to get into photography and video editing and it's becoming more and more of a passion for me rather than a hobby. I don't really own a professional camera or a dslr, i just use the camera on my iPhone 6s Plus but I haven't really taken photography too seriously. Next year will be my senior year in high school and I'm interested in applying for the student body optics team which takes photos and maybe the video editing team to record some videos.. I want a DSLR that is reasonably priced and good for a beginner, maybe around the $300-$500 range.. Any recommendations?

Any entry level (brand new) DSLR or (second hand) like Nikon D3#00, D5#00, D7#00, Canon, Sony, Panasonic you can buy.  Just check the specs to make sure they offer the minimum of what you want.

 good for a beginner

Other people have already given good advice (I'll add: get a D3300 and maybe the 35/1.8 dx lens, too), but I want to point out that basically every camera on the market is equally beginner friendly, if anything the entry levels are the hardest cameras to use due to the very modal controls (you have less knobs, so each knob has to cover more things).

The only "hard to use" cameras that I can think of are items that beginners will never stumble upon randomly, like foveon sensor ones or scanning backs. Most cameras that you can buy leave hilarious room for error, to the point that you don't even need to learn to do things correctly, for the most part.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in.  Like everyone else already said any camera you can buy because you are still a beginner and will be learning.

6300 can't do 4k, just has more autofocus points and a better EVF the $1500 A6500 will do 4k

You may want to double check the specs before you say something full of nonsense.  The A6300 can indeed film 4K, up to 30fps.

Get your facts right, the A6300 does 4K 30fps. Sure it has some overheating issues but if you hang around in colder climates and doesn't need to film for 30min straight it shouldn't be a problem. This is however up to the user. For interview stuff where it has to be running for a long time it may be better options but it still is a very good and sharp camera, even tough the overheating issue is the largest downside of it.

I'd recommend anything in canon's Eos rebel lineup, preferably the t4 or t6 series as they are newer, but a t5i is also a compelling option for cheaper. I have a t6i and a 6d, and as long as you have good lighting, the t6i will take almost as good if not better pics.
