After I learn the basic structure of HTML and CSS, and how to make things work the way I want them to (like managing the "cascading" part of CSS), what do I do? Do I just need to mess with stuff, experiment, and use references, until I get a bit more familiar with the languages? Should I try and find some courses to take?

 

What would the best course of action/path to follow be?

 

How true would the suggestions in this post be? I'm looking mainly at the first answer.

From personal experience, the best way to learn code is to code. Come up with ideas and bring them to life using forums and official documentation. Documentation is hard to understand at first but it is as important of a skill as knowing the syntax of the language you are coding in.

Youtube. I just think of an idea. Make a wire frame to help visualize buttons and links. Then start making it. If I don't know how to make something or want to add something then I google it. Just remember mobile friendly designs are more important then ever now.

I learnt on w3schools never used ca for html but their python class is pretty good.

after learning how it all works I suggest moving on to a framework such as bootstrap, knowing html structure and how to code by hand is all well and good but hand coding every single website is just a waste of time.

 

I would learn html, css and then JavaScript that will give you the foundation then learn bootstrap, SaaS and angularJS.

 

if you rather like more back end with databases I suggest php then move on to laravel. You could however, keep on JavaScript and learn node.js.

I 100% agree, I started learning HTML before anything and had simple table stuff (EWWW) then started looking at PHP before I really cared about CSS and JS. 
Even now, I have to sometimes google something because i've gotten mixed up with Java, C#, python and PHP.
