Hello, I'm not sure if this is posted in the right place, but here seems to be the best place.

Anyway, I currently have a PC that is capable of high quality VR (according to steam VR) although some of the hardware is getting pretty old now (although I have a Asus GTX 1060 OC in there).

So what I'm asking is, is it worth saving up and building a BEAST of a computer with the new hardware and slamming a GTX 1080 in there, or do I buy a HTC Vive?

Thanks

That all depends on if you are actually interested in any VR Titles... if you are just wanting to "try it" and then you grow bored of it in a few weeks after you get it then I would say go for a new PC / Upgrade your current one.

My dad as a PlayStation VR and I love it. I know the HTC Vive is meant to be a lot better, with the controllers and more. Also, with the growing number of titles, I'm sure it will be good.

As for my current PC, I have a fairly old motherboard which will, along with some other hardware such as CPU and RAM, have to be replaced. Which is why I would just want to build a new system but to the best I can. now building the new PC will cost a bit more than the HTC Vive.

VR is not mature. your 1060 will give you good game long time. buy gold if you think a recession is coming; buy vanguard stock if you think economy will improve. buy new pc later with more money when EA releases battlefield in VR

I will have the money early to mid next year, so possibly getting a new PC is better. I would like to try the Vive before I make up my mind. I'll see if there is a place for me to try.

I would actually opt for the Oculus as they also have touch controllers like the Vive and has more games available. There are places you can try it, perhaps at your local shopping centre/mall there will be a kiosk to pay to try. Just be aware that some people have contracted skin infections from using them (Presumably someone with pinkeye or somthing has used it before them).

I prefer the specs of the HTC Vive but didn't realise that the Oculus had more games. And I watched the WAN show when they where talking about the infections. gross!

There are some games exclusive to the Oculus (See recent Connect 3 event to know which) and it works with all Steam VR titles, I believe also it has a better screen but the Vive has those motion sensor things (Dont know what they are called, dont know if they help much, never tried it). If you do go out to try it, give the headset a wipe and wash your face well when you get home after.

1060 is more than capable of VR and your games run just fine maxed out or on very high preset.

1080 isnt worth the money you can buy HTC Vive with.

The only disadvantage atm of PC VR gaming is lack of games and small player base.

Connection200mbps / 12mbps 5Ghz wifi

My baby: CPU - i7-4790, MB - Z97-A, RAM - Corsair Veng. LP 16gb, GPU - MSI GTX 1060, PSU - CXM 600, Storage - Evo 840 120gb, MX100 256gb, WD Blue 1TB, Cooler - Hyper Evo 212, Case - Corsair Carbide 200R, Monitor - Benq  XL2430T 144Hz, Mouse - FinalMouse, Keyboard -K70 RGB, OS - Win 10, Audio - DT990 Pro, Phone - iPhone SE

There are a few games I can't max out, which I'd like to but this is probably due to my CPU. (AMD FX 8350)

I say wait for Kabylake and Zen and upgrade then ^^. As others have said, VR is going to become cheaper and better. But hey, do whatever floats your boat, you can play VR games with your setup

Yea, I think I will build a better/newer PC and then look into VR when it has become cheaper. Just don't want it to flop in the mean time!!!

Upgrade your PC.

If I upgrade my CPU, I'll need a new Motherboard as the sockets are different. then ill want to get a new motherboard with DDR4 which means that I'll have to get new RAM, so I'll just save up and build a completely new system from the ground up! The case is a bit battered too so, maybe its time for a nice new system. xD

Really? A vive is like £1000, 1080 is £600

Vive £1000 really?? not here...     http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-audio/gaming/virtual-reality/htc-vive-10144056-pdt.html

1080 on the other hand, yeah that's about right. I will have to save up for a while as I'm only an apprentice at the moment

LOL that escaleted quickly.

Well then build a new machine when kabylake or zen launches (whatever u prefer, skylake is already outdated, dont invest in it because you dont have low end system that needsan urgent upgrade to run the VR.) unless u have a massive itch to spend the money. I would still spend the money u have on VR and save up for PC later becauae u can run VR right now without any upgrades.

Then go for Zen 8 core or Intel i7 with either 1070 or hold on until Volta is out because you are really not doing bad with that 1060. Perfectly fine for 1080p 60Hz, different story at 144Hz.

Very true, although I can think of other uses for my current PC. i.e let my brother use it as hes always jumping on it now!
