is it ok to pair 2x16gb 3000mhz cl15 with a z170-a from Asus? The CPU supports up to 64gb but the Mb manual says 4x8gb only (compatibility list) and corsair website says that only x99 chipset is supported.

oh, and the mb manual also has 8x8gb as an option with only 4 slots on the motherboard so...

The manual only includes a list of tested kits, which typically is a very small subset of all kits that will work. The motherboard specs say it can take up to 64GB, meaning 4x16GB. Hence, it takes 16GB sticks.

The X99 mentioned by Corsair refers to "XMP 2.0", whatever that is. I'm pretty sure standard XMP will be there as well, it just sounds like they were ironing out problems that appeared OCing RAM in X99.

Your motherboard has support for 3000MHz RAM (in "OC" mode, that is, XMP), so most likely you won't have problems using it at the rated speed.

From what I'm reading, it should be fine despite what the manual is saying.

That being said, if something does go wrong, I doubt ASUS will help you. But I would say the likelihood of something being damaged would be very low.
