Go with an i3-6300 or look for deals on i5-6500.

At $180, it's too large a pill to swallow.

That's what she said!

I swear, that is going to end up being the biggest rip off of a processor seen since the Celeron D. The entry-level Kabylake i5 (presumably the -7400) will own it in every regard except single-core when the i3 is overclocked, and the -7400 probably won't cost more than an additional $20 or so.

The overclockable i3 is a G3258 clone. It's a novelty, not a good purchase, especially not at $180 (what a good i5 can be had for now).

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Does it belong in a museum?

Doesn't something have to prove itself to be remarkable in some way before it goes into a museum?

The price to performance is remarkable, no? Like King Tut's mask.

Once you account for the Z1/2?70 MoBo, the i3'll cost more

Fair point. Very fair point, and probably an accurate one.

Single-core, yes, and I still have one that I pop into PCs from time to time because it does outdo my other Haswell rotational player, the i3-4150, in most of the games I use it for where single-core is key. Still, though, it was never really a great processor for power users, just a really nice, cheap placeholder for something better.

Depending on what your use case is 4 physical cores of the i5 6500 may help a lot vs the dual core hyper threaded i3.

But for basic things and light gaming i3 should be fine. (i'm making a pc with i3 6100 for my parents who moslty watch videos, does taxes, excel stuff, and such. i3 is actually more than what they need but will be nice to have when i inevitably have to maintain it for them from time to time. might turn that into a HTPC at some point too)

For medium gaming/video or picture editing i5 would help a bit. I have an i5 6500 and it runs great. (even runs some games at 30-40fps decent settings without gpu, will get eventually)

If you have time to wait, wait. See how the new one performs, and the last gen chips may even go down in price a bit.
