Buy 780 or wait for 290x non-reference cards?

Should I buy a 780 or wait until 290x non reference cards come out? Which might be a month or two from now.

(My old graphic card (HD5750) just died.)

I'd wait, especially if you're going to game at high resolutions.

If you are debating waiting for a non-reference 290x do so and at least wait to see what happens with the 780 ti launch next month, (I'm hoping for a 780 price drop).

Definitely wait, because if aftermarket 290x turns out to be monsters, great.

If the 780Ti comes out to fill in the 780 and the 780 price drops, great too.

If you're playing at 1440p or 3*1080p or higher, definitely wait for the R9 290X. If not, wait for the 780Ti to push the 780's price down.

I won't be gaming higher than 1080p any time soon. The only thing that is keeping me from buying a 780 is that

I want to see how Mantle performs on Battlefield 4... as I am a huge Battlefield fan. :)

On the other hand I really like Nvidia's Shadowplay but that can easily be done with a capture card.. i think.

If I was in your position I would wait if possible. You've got a 780Ti launch hopefully coming soon as well as non-reference designs for the 290x. This could mean a lower price for the 780 as well as greater performance for the 290x.

This is the worst possible time to buy a 780, the 780 Ti is coming & the 780 will get a price drop not to mention that the R9 290 non-x is coming & it's going to cost the same as a 4GB 770 and perform like a 780.
Non-reference 290Xs are coming next week, both Elric & Linus confirmed that.

(and others that are saying its coming Q1 2014)

what is true?

What is true is that Elric & Linus are getting custom cooled samples from Asus next week, so expect those to arrive to market shortly after they're reviewed, which is in November.

^Wait for the GTX780Ti and buy a discounted GTX780

If you're just going to game at 1080p, just get a 7970/280x. It'll max out almost everything already. You can get a better gpu later when you move up to a higher resolution. The money saved from going to a 780 to a 7970/280x can go towards your next card that's probably even cheaper and better.

Wait until the benchmarks of the 290X non reference are out. See which one will be better for you by looking at the benchmarks along with temps and power usage.

Some games will perform better on one card than the other, see what games you plan on playing and see how they perform on each card.

BTW, at what resolution do you plan on playing and are you planning on upgrading your monitor to a higher resolution?

With NVIDIA's G-Sync and Shadowplay, perhaps waiting for the GTX 780ti might be a good idea as well as it is going to be released the same time around the non-reference R9 290X's.

Which resolution will you be gaming on? The R9 280X or GTX 770 might be enough if it's just 1080p.

If you keep waiting you will just be waiting all time . Ppl do that with cpu and gpus all the time

There will always something new and better

What I look at is cost and features

Pick the one that has what u wantbin features at your budget anything out now will play bf4 on high 770 up or 7950 up

Ultra I say 770 4gb and 7970 up easy so bouth 780 and r9 290x will work easy so look at cost and features bought got a lot going for them and for mantle I would say maybe 10 to 15 fps more on some maps
