I want to connect to a desktop (wireless or wired) via a laptop (close by, in a medium sized office) without the latency of teamviewer or splashtop. Also is anyone working on a thin laptop like device (screen, keyboard and battery to connect to a desktop) kind of like the neptune  concept?

Latency will always be there. Id use remote desktop built into windows. The only disadvantage is you can't play games, since its not streaming your desktop, its making a new session in remote desktop.

Wifi isn't great and probably a big part of the lag.

You can use stuff like VNC or steam inhome streaming, but you can use microsoft's remotedesktop built into windows.

Not worried about gaming, just for work.

Here is the long of it;

Right now I have an old PC (i2600k, 760 gtx) and macbook pro.

I want to buy/build a new pc to use as my main computer and a 1/2 decent windows laptop to use when I work remotely. The reason being, I work as a freelance vfx/animator/editor and need the horsepower of a desktop grade i7 and gpu.. also nice to have the storage, connectivity options, and upgrade options. Plus the cost is so much lower.. But I like working standing up, laying down, on the floor, in the tub, etc. I also get asked to work at the client's office sometimes and want an Ok laptop to do some basic stuff before I take it home to work on the project more.

I could buy a thin last generation or more laptop with ok specs (MSI, Razor) and build a powerful desktop for the heavy lifting.

OR get a Sager 10 pound beast and get a thunderbolt dock with when I am at home but looking for a more elegant answer..

Any help is appreciated.

  • 2 months later...

I have a similar setup with my Desktop with an i7 and gtx 980 with Windows 10 GB ram.

My Laptop has an i3 2328m cpu with HD graphics and Windows 7.

The laptop when using ethernet works perfectly with minimal audio delay (it does eventually catch up just disconnect and recoonect).

This works for me but keep in mind I tried Ubuntu, Windows 8 and Windows 10 but they all caused things like tearing in videos and bad animations but Windows 7 works perfectly.
