Where are you getting this information?

Tcase for the i5 4690K is 72 °C. I know the k versions can go slightly above that, but I wouldn't go 15+ degrees above that. I'd say turn the OC down if you care about longevity.

88C is quite hot, and 4.2 isn't a crazy overclock. I would look at turning down the voltage on your CPU. I used Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and went from 85C to 65C under prime95 load. Just turn down the Core Voltage offset by 10mv until it crashes, then go back 5-10mv and stress test for a few hours

I have just overclocked my i5 4690K to 4.2GHz, I am using the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo and my temperatures while under full load using Prime95 are reaching a max or 88°C, is this a normal or is my processor overheating?

go 4.0ghz and remember that prime95 is cpu hell, it puts a 100% load on the cpu, which would never happen in game. Take the temps you get from prime95 and use them sure, but understand that you will never reach that sort of load in game

Personal experience. I have run hardware at 100+ degrees for extended periods of time and years later the hardware is fine. Besides that, he is reaching 88 deg on a synthetic stress test. Temps won't likely reach that high in any real world application. Obviously, those temps are higher than recommended, and OP should probably invest in a better cooling solution, but its not like the CPU will explode after 2 hours of those temps.

It's under Prime if i understand so thats in normal usage ok, but a better cooler can vastly improve headroom. The 212 evo is a budget cooler that can do a simple OC, but is far from high end. High end coolers from like Noctua, can make it way better. But would recommedn the Scythe Fuma if available. Is also a high end air cooler that trades blows with the top Noctua, but luckily has no Noctua price.

The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.

I did as you said and this is as low as I could go without crashing, my temperature is not going above 78°C now, is there anything else I can change to improve cooling for my peace of mind?

Get better cooler. Evo is fine for decent OC. But if you want to go higher or get lower temps, you need more surface area. 78C under stress is good temp, nothing to worry about and you could try going even further. The 88C you mentioned earlier is about where I stop increasing volts and clocks.

As logicaldrm said, 78C is fine for p95 loads. One thing you can change is to set yout core voltage to dynamic instead of static. This is personal preference and it allows the CPU to use lower voltages when high ones are not required. It may have negative effects on your overclock though if that is your minimum stable OC voltage. You don't need a good cooler since you can now rest assured 78C is about as high as it'll ever go
