A while back my neighbor gave me an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, a chip I am familiar with as it runs in 3 other systems of mine, including my server. In addition to the CPU, he gave me an EVGA nForce 680i SE SLI motherboard, 4GB of DDR2 800 SLI memory, a Radeon HD 3870 and a case. I had never gotten this system working, until recently. Due to a stroke of inspiration I put in a Xeon 3050 CPU. The system posted (which it had sometimes done with the C2D but never fully posted) and ran perfectly. My question: could I simply have a dead CPU? That is all I can think of. Thanks!

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Maybe.  Core 2 duos are cheap.  You can buy a new one.

I'm good with the Xeon in the system for now. I have so many other computers I can use that I'm not worried about this one. I was just wondering about the probability of this happening to a CPU. My neighbor hadn't had any issues with it.

turn it into a keychain charm

If I never get it to work I will seriously consider doing that! There aren't any pins in the first place!

Test it with working mobo. Thats about only way to find out if its working or has some other issues with other components. Though if you get the system as package, it must have worked at some point with that CPU.

I was never told that this CPU was used with this mobo, I was only given them together. I will try it in a few minutes in a different board.

There is slight chance that RAM and CPU wouldn't work together. But very slight. I think mobo and RAM conflicting is more common.

I have checked the RAM. I used many different modules (and I mean a lot, as I have a lot of DDR2) and nothing helped. The system only posted once. Oh well. I'll test it in about an hour when I get time

Old post now, but I did check the CPU. It works fine in a Dell OptiPlex 330 system. I am really not sure why it won't boot in the other machine. Oh well. I don't need it anyway, as it's old as you know.
