Should i just upgrade my graphics card?

I've been planning to build a new computer, but it seems I simply do not have enough money.

So i thought it might do if I just upgrade my graphics card to a GTX 1070.

Here's my current rig. (yes I'm aware the the CPU cooler is a bit overkill)

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/pPNyVY

CPU: Intel Core i7-3820 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Nepton 240M 76.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

Motherboard: Asus P9X79 LE ATX LGA2011 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LP 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Crucial BX200 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 760 2GB DirectCU II Video Card
Case: Cooler Master Silencio 652S ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair CXM 450W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

I believe that i don't really need to buy a new processor, so would it do to just upgrade the graphics card to a Geforce GTX 1070?

yes, Your CPU is still very capable. I recommend just picking up a 1070 and you will be golden. Though i do not know if 450w is enough.

(wow, that was quick!)

Great! Swapping the power supply won't be a problem.

But do you think it would be reliably VR capable?

1060 / 970 is minimum for VR so there is no reason a beast 1070 won't be capapble

yea, itll be great for VR. Intel CPUs have not improved as much as you think. Even if you upgraded to a i7 6700k you would notice very little in frame increase when gaming. Its not worth spending the extra cash.

That i7-3820 should last you at least a few more years with that 1070.

While I don't disagree that a 550W EVGA G2 PSU is an excellent PSU, I wouldn't consider it an entirely necessary upgrade. The CX450M is a fairly good budget PSU.

I wasn't certain if it was a cx450m or not, so i popped it open, and lo and behold! It was a cx750m!

That's actually a fairly good PSU, although not entirely worth getting for its price if you were buying it new.

I'd keep it.

Its the same..both are bad psu..CX450M & CX..

what i am trying to say is that dont use a cheap PSU for $300 gpu.

the cxm isnt nearly as bad as the CX. The CXM is a tier 3 PSU. More then good enough to handle a single 1070.

Yes i know.. but it will be wiser to invest more on good quality psu if u want to build a high end rig beside i dont mind spending $20 more dollar to get evga g2.

and luckily if the OP want to buy one.

there's a promo on newegg for $60 to buy G2. while the CXM also cost the same.

I don't see VR being a big issue with the upgrade

I would also highly recommend picking up an e5 1650 or e5 2670 on eBay. The E5 1650 is a 3930k equivalent (overclockable) and the 2670 is an 8 core. Both can be had for roughly $100

but well its not my money.. its just a suggestion..take it or not it doesnt matter to me.

You seem to be getting flustered. I ran a mid level (budget high end) on a CX600M for well over 2 years, I still use it on an i7-4790k and a 1060.

We hear you loud and clear, but some people value their systems differently than others.

I'll probably get a better psu, as well as a surge protector (possibly one integrated in a ups). Since the power grid I'm connected to is a bit unstable.

Also, a cpu upgrade is cheap if you want. read my previous post.

I don't think he needs to jump from (4-8) to a (6-12) just for VR or gaming. Also, the wattage is much higher from 45W to 115W.

Im rusty on my chipset, but would the sandy bridge work with Ivy bridge CPUs?

Nevermind...It's the same 1155 socket... I had to look it up. Still holding on my reasonings against the upgrade.

just fine. Both are LGA 2011 based and the Xeons are compatible with x79. IMO if he gets a new PSU an e5 1650 for $100 would make sense because the OC using the multiplier up to near 5ghz on a cooler like that. Or the 2670 for like $80. it would make a much more balanced rig.
