AMD AM4, ZEN architecture

Hi all. I've heard that AMD is soon going to release a new CPU socket type and architecture. The other AM3+ socket cpus (FX8350) are cheaper compared to intel equivalent CPUs.

I have a budget of about 400 to 500 dollars and I am planning on building a PC soon. Since my budget is not high enough, I am considering AMD. Not only that, but I sort of think that AMD offer more for mid ranged PC than intel does, for the same price, that is. Is that new line of AMD CPUs going to cause prices of am3+ CPUs to drop? Is it worth waiting?

Thanks a lot.

Not really, there much worse than the intel chips.

For that budget, id get a i3, or waid for xen and see how it is. Id stay away from am3+ chips.

If you're considering buying CPUs from 2012, you may want to look into used Intel CPUs like the 2500K or 3570K. You'd still be better off than with an AM3+ CPU. I highly doubt the FX-8350 will become a better value when Zen releases, most likely Zen processors will replace all the old AMD processors with much stronger offerings at the same price points and the old ones will be discontinued quickly.

But also much cheaper. The problem is that there is only one price, while there are several uses for a CPU. The performance comparison depends on the use, the price is the same. At 8350 prices you can only buy i3s, perhaps the weakest i5 with a good deal, which may still be better for (most) games, but will be weaker in other applications.

However, they are still low value if you buy them new these days. In particular, if your main purpose is gaming, Intel has a large advantage there, and if you really want to cut costs down with AMD you are better off using the FM2+ platform. If you are going to buy into old architecture, though, take advantage that they are old and buy used. Compare used prices for AM3+ and older Intel models and decide where the best performance per $ is for you.

I expect prices for AMD CPUs to fall once Zen releases, because there seems to be a "top of the line" premium (in the used market) for whatever each brand has on the market, regardless of where it lies if you put all brands together, meaning that the price of 2nd and 3rd generation core i has fallen more in percentage terms that the price of Bulldozer/Piledriver. I believe a new AMD release will push the AM3+ used prices down, towards the same used/ratio as the Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge CPUs.

Sadly AMD is way behind and even a current I3 is already better for most use scenario's like a budget game PC. Thats why many people (myself included) hope theat Zen can deliver and catch up a fair part of that gap, since it has grown considerably large for several years.

As with many things there is more to the story of performance then just looking at ammount of cores and even clockspeeds in case of CPU's and GPU's when comparing. Don't know what you currently run, but since you mention that you plan to do it soon, would really wait those few months extra until both Kaby and Zen have launched. Around then there might be more options that fit your budget + it should be good for pricing in that price segment. Might even find something nice secondhand.

If you can't wait agree with the above people that you are best of looking at a current gen I3 or second hand Intel.

The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.
