intel's next CPU release is worthless for desktop use?

No IPC gains.

I'd wait til the benchmarks. they might only compare to haswell at best, then at that point who cares. or they might be better than skylake. but wait before you stir something up like this.

Personal build >  New-ish AMD main gaming setup

No. Zen is hitting Haswell performance. I'm hoping it surpasses this, but since it came from the director, I can't be too hopeful until benchmarks and real-world stats have been collected.

It's slightly ahead of Broadwell-E so take what you will from that, it's not at Skylake IPC, however it's 8c/16th and well price will dictate how well it does.

They've already stated that they're targeting similar price-points for the equivalents so the 8C/16T would likely be ~900 to remain competitive.

Going to be one hell of a boxing session in the ring.

Broadwell-E is nothing to sniff at not even close and the evidence displayed of this AMD chip clock for clock beating it is really something.

Are you referring to the AMD benchmarks by AMD? I wouldn't take those to heart as they come from the company itself.

Blender and Cinema 4D, not exactly bias.

We shall see when it all comes.

Those were by AMD but they overclocked and underclocked CPU's to show the performance as "equal". Hopefully it does do well, and if it does I'll buy a CPU just to show support.

AMD manipulated the hell out of those benchmarks. They always do. Everyone always does. Remember how the RX 480 was going to be VR for the masses, and what eventually stumbled out of the gate was a GPU that barely beats the GTX 970, which is itself barely useful in VR anymore? Or how Intel was going to completely shake up desktop processors with the Broadwell i5 and i7? And instead, all we got was an overpriced, underpowered i7 that had an epic iGPU...which would have been helpful if, you know, anyone ever bought an i7 intending to use nothing but the iGPU.

As of right now, the general expectation is that AMD is going to release something with Haswell IPC. The Broadwell-E stuff is a joke. Kaby Lake might have some marginal IPC gain, or, knowing Intel, it might not have any IPC gain at all and instead be an "architecture update". It's not like AMD has done anything that would cause them to show their hand lately. Even if AMD does hit Haswell speeds, they're still three generations and three years behind Big Blue. They'd have to really win on price to get Intel's attention, and even then, who knows what Intel has locked away behind the "break in case of AMD market share increase" glass?

I want Zen to succeed. Intel needs competition, or they'll just continue on with the 5-10% incremental increase in performance with each generation, and we'll continue to see the price of silicon climb with it. I'm also far from impressed with AMD's recent efforts, whether it's the underwhelming (still good, just not as good as hyped) RX 480, their continuing to warm over CPUs and APUs that date back to 2012, and their general unwillingness to go after the top end as of late. The most impressive advancement AMD has made to their CPUs in the last couple of years is a freaking stock cooler ffs. If AMD's not going to mount a real challenge to Intel, someone else needs to, because a market owned by a single player is not an innovative or cost-efficient one.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.
