I have the HPA4, but the old SE version, powers a good number of my cans easily enough.....I've tried my T50RP, HE-560, AKG K812 and even my DT990/600 Premium to loud enough level with some headroom to spare. Of course, I don't listen to ear bleeding levels so I can't say if it'd get loud enough, though I do believe the HPA4 should have any trouble with the HD6XX, heck, powers my HD800 to loud enough level easily enough.

Edit - Just fired up my Fostex HPA4 + HD800 and the unit has no problem hitting loud enough volume at the 10 to ~11 o'clock mark, this is without enabling Gain which would boost the volume higher. Playing some songs that were ripped into FLAC and they're certainly loud enough.

Thanks for that, just to check the A4 you're using is the USB powered one yeah?

If "loud enough" is the only metric that matters there's no point in an amp at all. The HD 650 doesn't require much power to reach a listenable volume.

Considering they have like the same sensitivity, that's not a surprise.

I'd only mentioned it 'cause OP had said he was looking into getting one, I was simply answering his question as to whether the HPA4 would be ' enough to drive it' as the OP had asked. I didn't consider it my place to talk him outta getting the HPA4, and since I have one myself, I could simply put his mind at ease (again, about it 'enough to drive it'with my own experience.

OK, I didn't know that, have never owned a HD600/650 series can, though I'm quite tempted by the MD HD6XX....must resist!

Heard from someone that there'd been 15,000 requests for it but only 5000 will be made.

Edit - Almost blew my ears out, left the volume knob on my HPA4 at ~11 o'clock mark and plugged in my ATH-A900X LTD (42 Ohm, 101dB/mW sensitivity), damn thing was LOUD! Had to dial it down to ~9 o'clock mark for a saner volume level.

Thanks though, was worried it being USB powered will make it hard to drive higher impedance headphones. Looks like I'm safe then

It's a question of sensitivity. A USB powered amp would or at least could have trouble with a low sensitivity headphone.

The ATH-A900X is fairly sensitive at 101dB/mW, so it may not be such a great analog for the HD 650.

I just bought my set about 10pm today, and within 45 minutes they sold out, theres already over 1000 requests for the product in the ten minutes the drop was closed!

Currently I have HD518's running through a Blue Yeti Mic. AS these headphones are 300ohms, I probably need the AMP (i seem to have a decent mobo so a DAC isnt required me I dont believe)
