Win 8.

They aren't expensive at all. You even happen to stumble upon one while on the internet.

but 8 is only 10$ more than 7 and worth it.

Like 80 pound for a piece of software

Why not try linux? Or OSX? Or you could try my personal favourite windows 95. Seriously I have a install disc of 95 right next to me. My point is try around ALL of the options not just ones from microsoft. A good way to do this is to go to a store like PC World or currys and test out the OSes running on the laptops they have there. To test linux download a distro onto a usb and boot to it. For OSX go to the apple store.

I'd go with 7. I can't stand 8 to the point that I run it in a VM on top of 7 to get the one feature I want from it - SMB 3.0. The point I'm making is that it's terrible enough for that inconvenient setup to be preferable to me actually having to use windows 8.

8.1 is an improvement but it's still intolerable for me. Until they back off with the stupid UI I'm out. If Windows 9 is the same I'm gonna move to Linux and stay there. I already use Ubuntu on every other device I own, only DirectX and the fact that 7 is still better than Ubuntu keeps me on Windows for my desktop.

Another vote for Win 8, if you don't like the UI just download one of the many start menu addons, turning it into Win 7 only better & faster.

not all Linux distros are free

Only Enterprise systems cost, and they are designed for servers, also the ISOs are publicly available still, just 0 support gets provided, as you buy a license.

For home use linux distros are free.

Anyway, at this point if you plan on gaming, which I assume you are, then linux isn't really for you, yet. In the future it will though.

Windows 8.

If you get Windows 8, you should come in with an open mind, and ready to face something different, if you go "aaaahhhaaAAA it's different go away! I don't have time for this..", then forget it.

On average, it seams to take about a month for people to get used to it, and learn it. After that they either like it, or prefer it over Windows 7.

It's just that Windows 8 has a steeper than normal learning curve, so you can't just get it to get it, you need to want it, or at least be open to change and give something new a serious try.

One things to keep in memory thaugh, the default layout of Windows 8 Start Screen sucks. But once you pin what YOU actually want/need, and sort from from most used at the bottom left to least used, or on your task bar already, to the right, then things will be easier.

Here is my start screen under Windows 8.0

dss.png

As you can see, I pin my most accessed folders at the bottom left, and programs I use the most.

Well... here is the thing.. there is "use the most" where I open and close often... and 'use the most" where I use it a lot, but once started I don't close it until I am done. That is why my productivity programs are a bit further to the right.

That is my layout. If you are more gamer, you want to bring your game closer, of course. What's cool about it, is that you can have all your games, Steam, Origin, UPlay, all in one place in from of you. No need to start each program and look where your game is, and all that. Too many clicks. Here it's direct.

I hear your call of indecision through the mist & shadows   I also feel the pin prick of indecision of upgrading the new system I plan on building to 8.1 and deal with  inadaptable issues that will come up .or I can windows 7 hard decision to make. but for me right at this time its sticking with win 7  but on my new build  I am thinking of windows 8.1

If you don't have a touch screen, Windows 7 is the only option that makes sense.

Desktop: Intel Core i7-6700K, ASUS Z170-A, ASUS STRIX GTX 1080 Ti, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512 GB Samsund 840 Pro, Seasonic X series 650W PSU, Fractal Design Define R4, 2x5TB HDD

Hypervisor 1: Intel Xeon E5-2630L, ASRock EPC612D8, 16GB DDR4 ECC RAM, Intel RT3WB080 8-port RAID controller plus expansion card, Norco RPC-4020 case, 20x2TB WD Red HDD

Other spare hypervisors: Dell Poweredge 2950, HP Proliant DL380 G5

Laptops: ThinkPads, lots of ThinkPads
