You have a overclockable chip and z series motherboard and haven't overclocked it? Get a GTX 1060/1070 and you'll be good. 1060 is all that is needed for 1080p but a 1070 will be needed for 1440p and games farther down the line if you don't plan on upgrading regularly.

Heyo folks,

 

This is my current setup and I am looking to improve/upgrade upon it. I would prefer to be able to keep most of the current components and mainly want to focus on upgrading graphics (both GPU and monitor(s) and storage).

If possible I would like to have a system that'll be able to run almost any game that comes out in the next year (or even two if possible) at 1080p 60 fps. The downside is my current monitors do not have the ability to make use of 'Displayport'. The LG screen is capable of using HDMI and VGA. The DELL monitor can use VGA and DVI-D. I do have a connector that converts my VGA signal to DVI-D and one for VGA to DVI-I but I am uncertain if these will work properly.

Personally I was looking at either the 1060 or 1070 but there is a huge price gap in between both graphicscards. From what I've read and seen the 1060 is capable of running current games at 1080p 60fps just fine. I am just worried that if I get that card it will be falling behind again by next year. The GTX 1070 is definatly within my budget, but I am not certain if I should focus on upgrading other parts of my PC before I make the jump from my current GTX 770 to a GTX 1070. I haven't looked into the options from AMD too much since some of the people I've met over the years often had issues when mixing Intel processors with AMD GPUs. 

At the moment my system is lacking a SSD, but I am unsure wether it is completely neccesary. I understand that it'll improve my loadtimes and boot-up times but I have not been annoyed by current loadtimes yet.

 

Simply put, my wishes/questions.

  • A system that can run current and up-and-coming games at 1080p 60FPS with programs in the background.
  • Ability to use two, if not three monitors simultaniously. I am willing to pay extra for connectors/adapters to change input formats. If neccesary one monitor could be replaced with a new one, aslong as it doesn't cost more than €200.
  • Price isn't too much of an issue aslong as total cost doesn't go beyond €1000.
  • Is it really neccesary to add an SSD to my system?

Really nice system, the only possible update as you said is a new GPU and a SSD which is true. For the GPU you can even get a 1060 put i'm not really sure if that would give you constant 60fps in all current games and future games.You can get a 1070 and be safe for the next 3ish years

1060 is fine for 3 years lol, probably even 5. Id personally recommend the 480 though.

You shouldn't have issues with an intel CPU and AMD GPUs. If you are worried about falling behind there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. A Titan XP today is the best but tomorrow it is the worst. An adapter should work. Some are cheap but most will work and you aren't doing any super high res or refresh stuff that some adapter might have trouble with. I personally would wait for the new GPUs coming out. Vega and 1080ti. The 1080ti might be out of budget but then you can see the other competition and performance/dollar on both sides. Or you can realize you will never be ahead of the game and get a 1070 and be happy with it for 4+ years and then buy another GPU.

An SSD for at least OS and programs is a very welcome improvement on overall system responsiveness so I'd say it's definitely worth it. Don't think it's as necessary for games since it only speeds up loading times, so sacrificing SSD space that could be used for games in favor of buying a less expensive, smaller SSD for just OS and programs and using the savings toward a better GPU makes perfect sense.

 

I'd say go for the 1070 and a decent SSD like a 850 EVO or MX300

First of all, thanks for the quick responses everyone. From what I gather the only components I need to upgrade are the GPU and adding an SSD.

As for SSD recommendations I've had my mind set on either an 840 or 850 EVO for a while so I reckon I'll be getting one of those.

For the GPU I'll probably go with the safer option of the 1070 so I have some future proofing for atleast a few years.

If a 1070 keeps him from upgrading to an SSD because of budget, then yes a 1060 is a better recommendation. If OP has the money, likes the idea of having a GPU he can keep using for a couple years more than the 1060, and can still also fit the SSD into budget, I wouldn't call it a waste.

I'm assuming you're implying the only benefit to an SSD is boot times. That could be the only noticeable benefit to someone strictly only playing games on a PC while running games from a separate HDD (otherwise include faster game loading) but I can confidently say that is not the only performance benefit to one.

You have a overclockable chip and z series motherboard and haven't overclocked it? Get a GTX 1060/1070 and you'll be good. 1060 is all that is needed for 1080p but a 1070 will be needed for 1440p and games farther down the line if you don't plan on upgrading regularly.
