Screen tearing solution

Guest

I recently learned what screen tearing is and was wandering if there was a solution to it besides nvidia G-sync as I'm about to get a gtx 1080 and own a 144hz monitor

V-sync

Just had a quick read on it. Apparently though, it's not very well liked

Only by the PCMR because "input lag" or "latency" or some other hardly perceptible reason.

Well ye as it can cause FPS drops and stutters. I'm glad I have G-sync now, but it's one of those techs that once you get used to it, you don't notice it anymore, until you play without it

I would think that screen tearing would be less of a problem for 144hz, but I would say that if you don't have g-sync just change your settings to make fps as close to your refresh rate as possible.

You can use V-Sync, but there will be input lag, just make sure to keep that in mind if you are going to be playing any competitive games with v-sync on

Yeah, for current and upcoming games, it won't be. I'm just thinking about my older titles.

If you're over you monitor's refresh rate, VSync can fix it, though it can introduce input delay and cause stuttering if you go below your monitor's refresh rate and don't have VSync in an adaptive mode where it turns itself off. Some games seem to handle VSync better than others.

Below you monitor's refresh rate, GSync is your only real solution for a GTX 1080. Be aware that it does not replace VSync, though. VSync will take over when you go above the monitor's refresh rate, or GSync will just simply deactivate if you have VSync off.

What about adaptive V-Sync. Cause apparently that's something only certain video cards have

Ignore the memes.  100% recommend always using vsync and manually looking your framerate at either 30, 45 or 60, 90 or 120 FPS depending on how well you run the specific game and your monitors refresh rate.  Even on a high refresh rate monitor and a framerate well below your refresh rate you can see tearing.  Alternatively, run your games in borderless windowed mode for windows vsync to take effect.

Locking your framerate can be done with Rivatuner Statistics Server, which can be downloaded independently or comes paired with MSI Afterburner.

Sometimes it's not noticeable, other times it's really bad to the point that you'd have to be slow in the head to not see it. BTW, animè sucks and it's for losers with too much time on their hands.
