DX12 and Cores

Ephy

Will Games benefit more from a Hexacore (6800K) or a Quadcore (6700K/7700K)?

I have no clue what I should get, Im also going for Photo, Video and 3D editing though

A 6700k and 7700k will be better in gaming by a 5-10% margin nothing huge, if you are getting 100fps in a game you might get 105 with the other. The 6800k in editing will be faster by a 20-30% margin so if you are rendering a video and it takes 10 minutes, it might only take 7 minutes to render with the 6800k so... how often do you make a video, and rendering a video is only maybe 5% of the work. Essentially all three of these CPUs are neck to neck with the real edge for the 6800k being in shaving a few minutes of time off when you render a video.

DX12 :

As far as theory goes:

If the game is heavily threaded (BF1, Crysis 3, RotTR, Wither 3 etc.) The benefits will be lower on the 6800K since it has more headroom and up to this day no single game can 100% that CPU.

If the game is Single threaded probably the benefits will be higher on the 6800K since it's performance is lower and may alleviate the bottleneck it can produce (Far Cry 4 is one of those games)

Image & video editing:

Photo edition:

Photoshop has some algorithms that are not too threaded. So 6700K ends up performing better than 6800K. Maybe the next PS will reverse this? Can't say yes or no.

Video edition: After Effects, has better performance with 6700K than the more threaded cousin in X99 due to workload. The guy from HardwareCanucs posted a video on this topic explaining why he changed his X99 for a Z170 platform.

Lastly, depending on the program, you won't use all your threads even trascoding. Handbrake H264 conversion is the best case scenario, but depending on your workflow you WONT benefit from more threads. Linus himself explained why a Xeon 22 core can be slower than a 6700K for transcoding in specific workflow scenarios.

I'd recommend to narrow your search using your programs as input.

Start with which programs will you be using most of the time with people that use them and show you the effects of one or other program.

I give you some channels with plenty info:

ARTIS uses a 6700K @4.6 as daily driver for his benchmarks. Since the 1070 and 1080 launches, some games are showing 100% usage.

Bang4BuckPCGamer uses a 5960X @ 4.5 as for his benchmarks. The only game that made that CPU suffer was BF1 in the Conquest 64 player map. Reaching 84% load.

Jocker Productions uses a 6800K @4.3Ghz but sadly he does not say how much cpu is the game eating :(

TotalBisquit uses a 5930K, and he shows statistics quite often in new games.

Best of lucks in your search!

According to slides from AMD during the DX12 launch, DX12 sees diminishing returns above 6 cores/threads.

Mind you, DX11 saw agressively diminishing returns above 3 cores/threads. It is/was a bitch to code for better parrallization then 3 threads.... So its basically a 2x improvement.
