AFAIK, you cannot have two i7s on a single motherboard... you can with Xeons however.

I'm not one to jump the gun, but it sounds like he's lying.

There are dual-socket LGA 2011-v3 motherboards out there, and it's not unthinkable that someone has two core i7s in there. However, if he built the PC just to game, he wasted his money. Having two CPUs lends itself better to production and rendering, or virtualization. That being said, maybe he's using the 'budget 8-core' solution @LinusTech made a video about, but instead of using old Xeons, he's using two core i7s.

Edit: apparently, he's a liar. You can't go dual-CPU with core i7 chips. Intel's Core series CPUs don't have the instruction set to work in dual-CPU configurations, and interestingly enough, neither do their Xeon E3 CPUs.

I believe you cannot have two i7s on a dual socket-motherboard. However, there are plenty of LGA 2011-v3 Xeons that can be put on a dual-socket motherboard.

Yep, I thought the same, after asking more about his rig,

More $$$$ than cents........

Why big overkill for a gaming rig as most games are not multi-threaded.

My bet would be on him mis-speaking.....

Ask to see it. If he is far away ask for a picture of him showing the system with the cover off to see the processors. Busted!

One of my colleagues said that he owns 2 intel i7's as well as gtx 1080 on same motherboard, is it true and if it is, is it even practical (he uses it just to game)

Hes making fun of you..

Tell him you have 4X i5's on your motherboard and that beats 2X i7's

Also you could tell him you have found a gtx 1090 Ti and it beats his 1080 sli..

Would be fun to see his face, or to hear what he will reply to you... sumthing like : I have just added 2 more i7 in my pc I now have 4X i7's it beats your 4X i5's

Your colleague is a lying idiot.  Disassociate immediately.

Ask him to start a thread on LTT about his one-of-a-kind dual i7 build.  Also, ask him for a picture of his build.  NOBODY would dare build a dual i7 build without doing build pics.  If he can't produce anything, just let him know that he's full of shit until proven otherwise.

He may just be confusing his Xeons for i7's, or just saying "i7" because he thinks it works as a sort of shorthand or something. Those seem more likely to me than just calling it an outright lie, anyway.

Dual-CPU systems are fairly exotic for consumer systems but not unusual at all in the world of servers and high-end workstations. You can buy Xeons from several generations ago on Ebay and set up a dual CPU system for surprisingly little money. Whether it helps or not is another matter. High-end (> E3) Xeons are very specialized and tend to underperform i7's and even i5's in poorly-threaded workloads due to low clock speeds, and many of those workloads tend to ignore a second CPU completely. They do very well in the tasks they were meant for, though. For games, I think it's a very silly choice.

Oh, even better.  Ask him to pull the service tag number for that computer up on the screen so you can check out the parts used in the build straight from the manufacturer's website.

He will be less offended when both of you are looking at it and he's proven wrong.

Technically HP does have a series of pre-built workstations, which may have dual Xeons. But if it wasn't one of those, yeah, it was a lie. And of course he's still very, very uninformed to think that was a good purchase for gaming, if that's what it was. :P

2011-v3 server motherboards do support more CPUs on same motherboard.

However, i7 CPUs don't support that. Only Xeon can be with 2 or more CPUs on same motherboard.

So just tell your friend that you have CPU with 192 cores with quad multithreading so you acctually have 192 cores and 768 threads.
