PCIe 2/3/4 - Gaming Impact

Schyken

I don't have much knowledge about the impact of PCIe Gen differences in gaming. I've never really popped in a PCIe 3 card into a PCIe 2 slot and games on it... When it comes to data processing, which is my area, it has a severe impact on time and efficiency. But, from what I can tell about how cards handle gaming, it shouldn't have such a devastating impact, yeah? I'm sure theres a difference, but not enough to suffer from it? (Any reading material/articles on this would be appreciated if you have the time to link me a few :P )

It's like food for the soul, but it's a drink for the body.

No, for gaming this isn't much of an assiue

“When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!”

- Cave Johnson, founder and CEO of Aperture Science, in Portal 2

well amd boards are still pcie 2.0 but their cards are 3.0 without anybody specifically calling that fact out i'd say for gaming it doesnt matter

i guess you are too lazy to google....

Has little to almost no impact:

Graphics cards use the PCIe bus as like a storage bus: it loads up everything it needs into VRAM and unless it's streaming textures in and out (which can be something like 1GB-2GB if that, and probably not all the time), it's not using it.

Would I be fine running a 1060 6gb off a PCIe 3.0 8x slot? It's working with a Xeon and the motherboard I might get only has dual PCIE 3.0 8x slots and the rest are less than that.
