It might try and boot the 8 on it.

- In your BIOS, you can set the boot order. Once you've installed the secondary HDD, make sure your primary HDD is still the first in line in the boot order.

- You can also alleviate the issue by installing the HDD in a sata slot with a bigger number. Your primary should be in sata0, but if it's not, move it there and plug this in sata1.

In addition to the Windows on what used to be the C:/ partition on the HDD, there's more partitions on it. Most importantly there's a boot sector on it. It's a kind of list of operating systems that the drive provides for the BIOS and that's how BIOS knows where to find the OS. All this means, if you simply format the old C:/ partition, the bootsector will still be there but now it points to nowhere. So you have to remove all partitions on the old drive. So once you get to windows, open disk management and remove all the partitions on the drive, not just the old C:/. Once you've done that, you can create a new partition on the drive and format that. Or use the clean command in diskpart and then format.

Use a bootable USB/DVD to format the drive you don't want to boot.

If you need some files off the drive, you can also do it that way. For instance using a linux live USB and then browse the drive you want stuff from and move it to your other drive.

Power down the machine. Turn it back on, mashing the f12 and select the drive you want that way.

Go into your motherboard BIOS by shutting down your machine, then starting it back up and hitting F12 until you see the BIOS. From there you would go to your Boot options (Refer to Mobo manual if you dont know where it is) and set the drive you want to boot off of to #1.
