1440 vs 4k

LonestarJ450

Hi,

1. I have the choice to get either:

Dell U2713HM 1440p IPS 60Hz ( the cheapest )

Acer XG270HU 1440p TN 144Hz ( the most expensive )

Samsung U28D590D 4K TN 60Hz ( in between )

2. The 60Hz is like a bottleneck, but does it matter when playing games? Is it a deal breaker? This is going to be my first PC and Monitor switching from console

Thanks for the feedback

IMO, the impression of 70+ Hz in over a 60 Hz cap is amazing, in 3D games. If it were me, I would make sure whatever monitor I get either natively does 75+ Hz, or that it can be reliably overclocked to 70+ Hz.

Nah, it's mostly for competitive players where smoothness matters above all else. I recommend the Dell, IPS is a wonder and your GPU probably won't be able to get very high settings at 4k anyways

I can get a msi R9 390x for the same price as a rx480, and the R9 fury cheaper than a gtx 1070.

thank you, I was really concerned about the refresh rate being at 60. But you need a powerfull Gpu to push 144hz

Why those options? 4K PLS/IPS/VA monitors (or 1440p, for that matter) aren't that expensive any more. It's not like 2014 when the jump from TN to anything else was like five times the cost.

Going from console, you are frankly going to be impressed enough by merely seeing 60 fps. Going from 792p < 30 fps to 2160p 60 fps will be one hell of a difference. That being said, only you can tell you whether the tradeoff of higher pixel density for a lower framerate than 144 hz is worthwhile. You need to go out and try to view the difference because it is entirely subjective, and also varies depending on the types of games that you are playing.

You'll even have to turn down settings to achieve 144 Hz at 1440p, let alone 4k

1440p 144 fps is much, much more demanding than 4K 60 fps though. (It's around 33 million pixels per second more to render than 4k). Also the 4K is more attainable because even with all of the Titan XPs on the planet, a lot of game engines don't allow the CPU to stretch its legs enough to give you 144 fps at all.

That was also on my mind, the deference in price to hit a solid 60 FPS with a 60Hz monitor is cheaper by a mile in my country than 144Fps

I would rather max out the settings and get a solid 60 than to lower my settings

as a fellow south african, go for the 1440p IPS panel, 140 Hz will not have as vibrant colour and trust me from a console to a 1440p 60fps experience, you will LOVE IT!

Edit: if you can get a RX 480 though it would be better than the R9 390 also Where about in SA do you live what is the price you got on your GPU?

edit 2: sorry didn't see you were going for the 390x I misread that. still give me the prices you got I know a few places with great prices.

Those Gpu's cant really push 4K games very well, if you are willing to go outside of these 3 options I think this monitor might be good however It has poor quality control so it might be a gamble: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236466 also its on sale the next 2 days.

They're fine. Turn AA of, turn HBAO off, mess around with presets, it'll be fine. The 1070 is roughly equivalent to the 970 SLI I used to have, it should be fine with Very High presets generally. The 390 is considerably weaker but medium presets should be OK. It's not like the difference is even that noticeable really. Oh no the shadows have a slightly too-defined penumbra.

I am in South Africa, to give you an estimate after taxes and stuff a monitor is 80% more expensive than it is in the US. One of my friends can give those to me much more cheaper

What do you think about the Overall Performance between the 390x and Rx480 after OC both?

to be honest they are very very close. One will win in certain games while the other pulls ahead in others. I personally would take the RX 480 merely because of the newer architecture. But that is just me, you'll be happy with the one you pick regardless. just keep in mind that the 8 GB 480 is a way better option than the 480 4gb in the long haul.

also the 480 is more power efficient.

I got an i7 4790k with 24 gb ram (odd I know) a Samsung 950 Pro 512 gb, GTX 980 Ti Kingpin, 700 watt PSU, used to have a 29" 21:9 1080p monitor (broken atm) now gaming on a 1080p LG 23" monitor. 3x 2 TB harddrives oh yes and the mobo is an Asus z97A

Second pc is an intel E 5 2630 v3 (8 cores 16 threads 2.4 - 2.7 Ghz) with an Asus Deluxe X99 motherboard, 16 gb DDR 4 ram and an intel 510 SSD, 550 Watt PSU and a GTX 980 also working / gaming on a 1080p 23" monitor 1x 2 TB HDD

I'm saying that you can go for 4K on either of those cards. Obviously the 1070 will be better than the 390 (and there are obv better cards still), but it's doable. You just have to mess around with graphics settings. The 1070 will want settings around Very High, the 390 will want Medium and possibly even Low to maintain 60 fps. (And they wonder why I always said that putting more than 4GB vram on Hawaii was a waste of time :P)

As to whether you should, well that's down to you. 4K is objectively better than 1440p, no question. However, until DP1.3 is taken advantage of (which, btw, the 390 does not support) you are limited to 60 fps. You need to decide whether you care more about having a framerate higher than 60, or having the pixel density of 4k. I can't answer this for you, it's entirely personal preference.
