Is it just mine, or are all graphics cards surprisingly cool now?

pipnina

I've upgraded from a 670 to a 1070 recently (670 died on me :() and one thing that's rather weird is that the card's fans aren't on by default... And even under heavy load for a long time the card never gets far into the 70c's and the fans never break 1000RPM. There is no hot breeze coming from the back of my case (like with my 670 and 560ti) and the side of the case barely gets warm.

Are all graphics cards this efficient nowadays? How will I stop my bedroom from freezing when my parents have all the windows open in December? :P

I would agree older cards did seem a bit hotter but then I had the famous GTX 580 which is known for running super hot now I have a Maxwell Titan X and although they can get hot considering how much power they pack they don't get anywhere near what my 580 did and have been using water blocks on both the cards gtx580 got to 60's under water and my Titan X never get above mid 40's

Custom PC:

Intel Core i7 5960X GTX1080 Strix | 64gb 2400mhz DDR4 Corsair Vengeance Ram | Samsung S951 256gb M.2 | 4TB WD Blue SSHD | EVGA Supernova G2 1300watt PSU | Acer XB270HU | Corsair K95 RGB | Corsair M65 RGB |

no they're not...my GTX 980ti is a pretty hot card...and so is anything above mid-range from AMD...big chips are still hot...like the new titan XP and the upcoming 1080ti those are built on big dies and they still output a fair amount of heat...it's better than it use to be but still not perfect...GTX 1070/1080 are fairly cool...1060/1050 are stupidly cool.

It's not you. There's a reason they're beginning to use full desktop chips on MXM cards and even on board in laptops. It's pretty cool if you ask me.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I second that. My 980Ti Classified was running pretty hot out of the box, 84°C on full load at around 70% fan speed to be exact. My HD 7950 Boost ran cooler and quieter than that. Got myself a Kraken G10 and x41 to solve the heat/noise problem.

whoahhh something was wrong with your card mate...mine is running at max of 76c with about 50% fanspeed with a 1420mhz overclock...but there is still a good amount of heat output the air coming out of the back of my case is pretty warm when playing BF1 :P

My Asus Strix GTX 1070 is the same way. I don't think I've ever seen it actually hit 70*C, even overclocked. Maybe if I ran Furmark, but I don't really feel a need to do that. :P

With the massive difference in performance between a GTX 670 and GTX 1070, it's easy to forget you actually took a step down in TDP. The GTX 1070 is closer to a GTX 660/660 Ti in thermal performance. I know the feeling, my last card was a 220 Watt GTX 770. My 1070 achieves similar idle temperatures to my 770 with the fans completely off.
