How often do you upgrade your hardware. a.k.a how often do you purchase new macs.

  1. 1. How often do you upgrade your hardware. a.k.a how often do you purchase new macs.

    • I upgrade whenever Apple comes out with new model. (Cutting edge tech is important to me, also I have the budget, so why not?)
      3
    • Within 3 years. (Mostly I try to use what I have, but sometimes the newer model is hard to resist. I hate impulse purchase but sometimes it feels great to own what you wanna own immediately.)
      11
    • 3-5 years. (Typical electronics life expectancy here.)
      27
    • More than 5 years. (I love my hardware and I treat them with care. My macs can last more than 5 years easily.)
      31
    • No matter how old the machine is, if it works, I will use it. When it dies I throw it away and buy the latest highest end one and make it last as longer as it could. (I am not poor, by any means. But I treat my financial decisions very carefully because every bit counts. )

macs are resilient

mine is the 2010 model.  yea i know its old, but just placed an ssd, made it 8gb ram, and the laptop is still doing what i need it to do.

also, since it cant play games, it removes the temptation of gaming during class. ahaha

There is no such thing as a bad PC, there are only BETTER PCs

I have the first retina MacBook Pro model from mid 2012. It still works great, battery life is still reasonable. I bought the top of the line model with a 2.7 GHz CPU and 16 Gb of ram. I'm still really happy with it, never had any problem.

Anyway, I will upgrade, depending on the announcements this week, mainly because I need more battery life.

16G of ram is great for development. I want one xD

Nah man, you are good. See at this thread how many people are rocking a pre 2010 machine and be proud of it.

I love my MP :) It just doesn't want to "die"! Okay, I had to hack a few things here and there to get the software up to date and make it use unsupported GPUs, but other than that, it's still a great performer! Running 24/7 non-stop, completely stable, never had a crash in more than 2 years, serving multiple clients both locally and from the internet. It also Geekbenches 15k multi-core, not too shabby for an almost 10 year old machine, right? :)

Not really, just a quick cpu will do. It's also easier to use on bigger high-res screens.

I have a MacBook (Late 2008) and a Hackintosh (i5-4670k@4,4GHz, 32GB DDR3 2400MHz, GTX 970). The MacBook is ready for retirement.

I'm hoping tomorrow's announcement wil include a MacBook Pro that will suit my needs for a long-lasting laptop. I'd like a proper quad-core (but I could live with a dual-core with HT), a minimum of 16GB of memory, Thunderbolt 3, and a reasonable price. SSD size is of secondary importance, but ≥256GB would be nice.

I use my 2010 MacBook for school work, cos my school is stupid.

I saved close to AU$1500 by purchasing secondhand, and this machine is very good. It's not blazing fast, but for what I need a computer for, it's great. It even works with Photoshop, and is pretty snappy.

Intend on keeping this machine till it dies, and will keep trying to load new versions of macOS even if they aren't compatible.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't expect a quad core in the 13" Pro.

@tatte   Hey, one thing I wanna ask you.

If let's say that I wanna buy a second hand macbook pro.

How do I make sure that the machine works 100%?

Is there any sort of stress test/screen test I need to do????

What do you do, every time you bought a machine??? I am afraid someone selling me a machine with hidden problem.

I buy my Macs from the community forums of Finnish Apple User Group, and I mostly trade face to face. So far I haven't asked them to run any tests for me. My advice is to only buy from sellers you can verify to be legit. Dealing with companies adds several layers of customer protection, and when dealing with a private person you should at least make sure you know who you are buying from.

Stress testing gets so time consuming that I wouldn't ask a seller to go that far. It's not unreasonable per se.

I once upon a time contributed into getting the HD4890 working under 10.6 with a custom BIOS that included EFI drivers and also a custom kernel for OSX to identify the card. Currently I'm running an HD5870 which is also flashed to work in OSX but that was easier as the card itself had an official mac edition so flashing it made it work out of the box without any software tweaks on the OS.

I'm using the original intel Mac Pro 1,1 (flashed to 2,1) that came out in 2006/2007. I used pike's "pikify" utility to successfully install 10.11.6.

Well, it's not specific "server" software really, I'm not even running the server edition of the OS. I simply set it up to run the server nodes I want: Apache/MySQL/Nginx, Plex, Minecraft, Cockatrice, and I'm also sharing a drive with the network and using other drives for backups.

I will post pics later ;)

I would say, the biggest problem for me would be the low res screen. Then I would just try with yours for now and you will probably see if you need ram more...
