How many watts

Dackzy

So I plan on getting a x99 system and it will have SLI or CF next gen GPUs, maybe CF when Vega is out, but only if it is better than a GTX 1080.

I will OC my CPU (6850k), ram and GPUs. It will have 3-4 hardrives, 5-7 fans, maybe a mimo wifi card and most likely a AIO of some sort. I want a bit of headroom, not something that is on the boarder of being enough. I will also only buy 80+ Platinum  or Titanium, so no gold, silver or bronze. This build is all about high quality.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

Build up the system on PC Part Picker, it will give you a wattage useage and go from there

I'm assuming your budget is pretty flexible so I'll suggest the Seasonic PRIME 750W if you're going 1080s in SLI. I have no clue about how much power Vega consumes.

It really depends on the final build ie. HW choices. Personally I have a good luck with EVGAs SuperNOVA G2 line, personally and for two of my friends I've built PCs for using these PSUs, so I would probably look at their SuperNOVA P2 line. :)

700W-750W for SLI or CF will be way more than enough.

My personal PSU choice is SuperFlower or Seasonic.

Also why waste money on 6850k? Just get 6800k. Those extra PCIe lanes wont be used even with SLI and a couple of PCIe SSDs.

Personally I would probably shoot for the 1000W just to be on the safe side with some headroom to not stress the PSU too much. 1200W if you really want a lot of headroom.

If I am not mistaken SuperNOVA line uses Superflower internals from the G2 line up. So that's pretty solid. :)

Yeah I was also thinking of getting a 1000-1200w PSU, sadly my AX860i is not enough

PCpartpicker says 820w for stock, I am going to OC everything.

let me put it this way SLI or CF can run fine for now with 16x 8x, but that is only some of the things that I might get, that I put in that build and if we take a 6800k then both GPUs would have to run at 8x the math looks like this. 8+8+4+4=24, that means that I have 4 lanes left, that seems fine for now, but I will most likely add more things in the future.

If I got the 6850k then I could run both GPUs at 16x, so the math would be 16+16+4+4, then I would have no lanes left, BUT I can easily get 8 lanes, just by running one GPU in 8x, that would leave me room to add more things in the future and running you CF or SLI in 16x is just balling, plus AMD GPUs would maybe like the extra bandwith, since their CF tech works over PCIe. I have yet to test if there is a performance difference between 8x 8x, 16x 8x and 16x 16x with AMD GPUs.

Heck if I can get maybe 30% or more off the 6900k then I am going with that CPU, if you were wondering why I even want/need a six core or eight core, I do 3D work sometimes and it will be a part of my daily life in the near future.

You're thinking about getting the Radeon Pro WX 7100? $1000 USD is a steep entry price...

Assuming the power consumption (not power efficiency) of NVIDIA's Volta (which I presume are the cards you're talking about) remains the same as Pascal, you should be fine on a 1000W power supply with everything overclocked heavily and at max load. Remember PCPP always displays the worst possible outcome and even then, it still overestimates.

I would suggest the Seasonic PRIME Titanium 1000W unit when it comes out, hopefully before you start building.

But regarding PSU.

820W is way overkill. I suggest go with 850W if you want a lot of headroom but anything above that is just waste of money.

You can easily SLI 1080s on quality 550W PSU and also get a bit of OC from them.

I possibly can't imagine what would you need more than 750W PSU for even if you got Titan XPs.

this is not 1080SLI, it would be closer to 1080ti SLI with a heavy OC so around 250w each and a CPU that would become 150w when OCed. PCpartpicker says 820w at stock speeds for my setup, so that leaves me 180w of headroom with a 1000w PSU, that might seem like a lot, but when it comes to OCing it is not that much.

PCPP grossly over-estimates the PSU wattage based on TDP (which is a measure of heat needing to be dissipated). I would recommend a +850W PSU but seeing that you're using many hard drives I'd go with a 1000W P2.

yeah, but from the testing I have seen the cards draws close to the TDP, when they are running at 100% and they will run at 100% sometimes. Is 3-4 hard drives really a lot? I am looking at HX 1000w and AX1200i.

this build is going to be overkill in every way, but I would hate myself if I went for a more normal system, but ended up need all of this power in a year.
