Computer shuts down only in one game

Go to solution Solved by Jimboyftw,

Update: I opened up my pc, didn't find much dust at first glance. Decided what the hell, pulled my PSU out of my computer and took it apart and it was full of dust so I took my hand pump and blew it out, gave the fan and caseing a clean and reinstalled the PSU. Computer booted just fine (so no worse off) then I opened wow and to my amazement I've been playing without anything happening for the last 20ish mins.

Just want to thank you guys for pushing me in the direction of Jayztwocents video, it actually worked, not too sure why it was only with wow, I assumed it was a case of it worked or it didn't.

DISCLAIMER: its dangerous to pull apart a power supply even when the computer is powered down, warrantys will set on fire, you could get hurt or damage your pc.

Hey guys I'm having a few issues and for the life of me can't work out whats going on and I was wondering if someone had any advice.

Problem: everytime I load up the game WoW my computer restarts without warning, no BSOD or error. I get around 10-15 seconds of play before the computer restarts. The issue is that I can play ANY other game and not have this issue, I can browse the internet or watch a movie and my computer does what it should do.

Steps i've taken:

  • Changed antivirus software from avast to avira
  • Updated to the latest Nvida graphics drivers
  • Completely resintalled the game
  • Run virus/malware scans
  • Removed any mods from the game

Computer specs:

  • Windows 10 64 bit
  • Gigabyte H61M-USB3V
  • Intel i5 3330
  • 2x4GB Corsair Xms3 Classic (1600MHz XMP profile 1)
  • GTX EVGA 970 SC
  • 2x WD Caviar green 1TB storage drive
  • Xenta ATX-550W PSU

If anyone has any ideas to whats going on, any advice would be great or let me know if I need to provide any more information. I just don't understand how I could only get this problem when playing wow, playing a more demanding game like Arma 3 is just fine or a less demanding game like hearthstone. my fear is that its my PSU, don't have the cash to replace it until the end of the month so I'm hoping its a software issue/uncommon bug.

Thanks in advance, much love

James

I watched JayzTwoCents video recentrly and of his friends had the same problem with pc shutting down in WOW . He just cleaned the pc and removed the dust from the components and it fixed . Try to clean off the pc , if it doesn't help check your power supply :)

Science Studio, or JayZTwoCents did a video similar to your problem. WOW PC crashing, or shutting down randomly. He cleaned out all the dust from the PC and then suddenly it worked fine.

Open your PC and see if it's dirty, or dusty. Also blow air into the power supply with a compressed air computer cleaner. It's difficult to see in, and you don't want to open it to check.

It may not be your problem, but it's worth checking.

Just checked out the Jayzytwocents video, which funny enough was his last video (good timing I guess). I don't have any compressed air but I do have a hand pump so maybe that will work, I'll give it ago. I did open my pc up, yes there was some dust in there but not major amounts. As you can probably tell this is a cheap PC with a cheap case, the PSU is mounted on the top so its not sucking in dust/dog hair of the floor. Either way I'll give it a clean (to the best of my ability) and let you guys know if I have the same luck as Jayztwocents.
