Q: I was going to go for the 1060 Zotac or the MSI 480 and was trying to see which GPU will give me at least 5 yrs of solid use in games in 1080 decent fps and also in the editing videos

I am not rich guy so I am trying to future proof my current build as much as I can.

All answers are appreciated :)

All in all, the GTX1060 6GB is faster. The RX480 beats it in some Vulkan-optimised games, but my choice would be the 1060.

Depends of Vulcan api becomes popular. I mean with amd you get a lot of raw computational power so it will probably do better than the 1060 down the road when both companies stop optimizing their performance

I still lean towards a 1060 6GB over a 480. People will come with the DX12 and Vulkan story, but even then they trade blows, and on current DX11 it performs better. Also DX 11 is still the base for the comming games to come while DX12 support is later added (henche why some games run worse on 12 then 11 imo). In 2-3 years DX12 is more mainstream and will also be the base for the games it's developed on.

Neither in my opinion. You'll likely have to replace them in 2 generations while the 1070 will last 3 or more.

1060 6GB and RX 480 would be my recommendations. It mostly depends on if you want Vulkan support (RX) or DX11/12 performance (1060).

Not sure, but the 1060 didn't support SLI, right? So in the interest of "future proofing", I would buy 1x 480 today. When your computer can't keep up anymore, buy a used second one, and you could last maybe another year (or 2).

So does that mean that in 3yrs the 480 will still be able to trade blows?

Jup. That doens't change a lot over time. It's more that both of them will be outdated in a few years. Currently the steps taken in GPU power are more interesting vs CPU, because the need for better performance out there. So both cards will be then a not so logical choice compared to the then current gen cards. But if they suit your needs now, they are still good unless your screen reso changes and is requiring more power. So all thats left then is how big the jumps of possible future titles will be in what is required: it will go up, but don't think it will be so huge it makes them obsolete.

For that reason you could indeed also consider a step above with a 1070 like others mentioned. Currently the 1070 is also decent for 1440p ultra overall, so I expect that for future titles on 1080p the 1070 is still enough over 3-5 years, unless the demand for power makes giant leaps for some reason.

Don't do this: betting on multi GPU (SLI/CF) while there are possible single card solutions now is a overall dumb thing ( part of reason why the 1060 has no SLI possibility). Just to many depends on how well it's implemented and that story is just overall not great. Doubt it will change to better, think personally it will get worse. Even if it delivers higher fps, the game might play less smooth still vs a single card solution.

Topic starter doesn't want to spend lots of money while keeping his computer good enough for a few years. Buying a new GPU in a few years takes lots of money, compaired to a 2nd used 480 in SLI, and you will get an acceptable performance boost. No everyone can buy a brand new high end desktop pc every 6 months...

RX 480 imo if you ever think you'll get a new monitor. Freesync is so much more available and doesn't cost a premium.

I don't think the 10-20 frames the 1060 has is worth it when it comes to the other benefits the rx 480 gives you.

The only other reason I'd say you might want a 1060 is the fact that it runs cooler and consumes less power, but even then the new XFX 480 GTR fixes that issue.

Honestly, given the still rather rapid development in video card land, future-proofing videocards is really a useless proposition. There's simply too much inflation on them, and the increase in price for a better card at some point starts surprassing the increase in performance (thus making it a better value proposition to simply buy a new card 3 years down the line).

Futureproofing is often ineffective costwise (although it can make sense with components that do not suffer much from cost inflation).

The best you can do is work out the fps per dollar price ratio for both cards and then choose what works out best. On nVidia's side tte 1060 seems to be the best deal they have on offer right now (the 3 GB model that is). From a price performance perspective the 1070 is a worse deal, nor does it really bring much to go back to the last generation (you're usually losing too much performance to compensate for the price decrease). Can't tell you how it works out vs the RX 480. Just calculate the price / performance and compare from there.

It stills hits 1080@60 in most games even now. Also, the 780 Ti is approaching 3 years IIRC.

It stills hits 1080@60 in most games even now. Also, the 780 Ti is approaching 3 years IIRC.

Same as a 290X, which is faster than a 780Ti despite being considered slower and cheaper at launch.

I don't see what the main point is? I wouldn't consider a 780 Ti future-proof as the cost is too high for the longevity.

My thing in all of this is that I have 270 budget for the GPU

I wont be taxing the card too much since I have a ps4 so I'm looking for the longrun of things
