Mechanical keyboard necessary?

Well, a mechanical keyboard feels a LOT better to type on. It's not too important. I used a Logitech G105 for the longest time (membrane). If you often type a lot and game a lot, Cherry MX browns (or equivalent), would be the way to go. Reds are more for "gaming" but imo I don't like them because I can't tell if I'm accidentally hitting a key as I tend to rest my fingers on the keyboard.

CPU - FX 8350 @ 4.5GHZ GPU - Radeon 5700  Mobo - M5A99FX Pro R2.0 RAM - Crucial Ballistix 16GB @ 1600 PSU - Corsair CX600M CPU Cooler - Hyper 212 EVO Storage - Samsung EVO 250GB, WD Blue 1TB

Do you put all of the weight of your hand on the keyboard? I've never had that issue with my Reds.

I recently switched from a membrane to a mechanical (G105 to K70) and the mechanical has a nice feel to it but I still suck at CS:GO.  If I was back in school typing 20 hours a week I'd definitely want the mechanical but there's some nice membrane keyboards out there at less than half the cost.

I spent 110$ on mechanical keyboard out of curiosity. I always used membrane.

It is definitely an improvement but not worth 110$... go for some nice membrane one.

Typing on it is most beneficial.. I have cherry mx blue switches.

They're not necessary, until you decide to try one out. I've been using membrane for most of my life, and got a mechanical keyboard a couple of years ago. Now I can't go back to membrane! Perceived gaming advantages aside, they're just so much more comfortable and responsive to type on.
