Why does it crash ? R9 290x Matrix OC

MadMurl0c
Go to solution Solved by Sauron,

The fact that it works in some programs doesn't guarantee it will work in all of them. If only one game is crashing tune it down until that game works fine (or add more voltage, but 1.375 is already pretty high).

Hey guys who all know more about overclocking than me :D

Today I overclocked my R9 290x Matrix to 1190Mhz @1.375Volts, it ran Unigine Heaven Benchmark for more than one hour and 3DMark Firestrike at a maximum of 73°C I didn't see any artifacts while benchmarking / stress testing, but when I try a Game like Tomb Rider for example my pc freezes and I have to restart it. But no errors appear in Rainbow 6 Siege / Anno 2070 / GTA V, does someone know why?

I tried this different clocks for Tomb Raider..

1000Mhz - 1050Mhz (stock voltage // 1250mV) : works

1060Mhz (stock voltage // 1250mV) : doesn't work

1060Mhz (1375mV) : doesn't work

My System:
AMD FX8320 @ 4.2Ghz / 1.3625V

R9 290x Matrix

ASRock 970 Performance

be quiet straight power e7 700w

Did i forget something important? If yes, just ask

Thanks in advance for your answers :)

Overclock unstable, back it off or add more voltage.

Just because it is stable in a hand full of test doesn't mean it will be for everything. Personally, I would add a custom profile for that game and use slightly lower settings.

By Tomb Raider you mean ROTTR? (Rise of the Tomb Raider)?

@vorticalbox But I don't understand why it crashes there, just 10Mhz more and adding 125mV isn't enough?

@Morgan MLGman Nope, I mean Tomb Raider (2013)

It might be the PSU. It's not of good quality.

It can crash because 'insert reason here' some engines some games just don't work. I have had my 7770 at 1120 (1020 stock) i don't have voltage control so just +20% on the power limit and it was fine in every single game but hitman. No idea why.

R9 290x, already a hot card, try creating a custom profile for tomb raider 2013 and add more voltage

I'm not on water, I just got a Raijintek Morpheus 2 on my graphics card.

Still crashing @1060Mhz with 1.4V, I guess I have to create a new profile for Tomb Raider where I set the clock to 1050Mhz ^^

Woah. Turn down the voltage. What are your vrm temps? You're pretty daring to be putting 1.4v on air.

It only had 1.4V for a very short time but the game crashed directly after the Menu again, I don't know the vrm temp. AIDA64 and GPU Tweak II said that my GPU Temp was 82°C which is okay I think because with the stock asus cooler I had 94°C while gaming for 2-3 months until I bought another one.

Use gpuz to check.

GPU-Z only shows Core Clock, Mem Clock, GPU Temp, Fan Speed % / RPM, GPU Load and Memory Usage / Load, no vrm temps. Maybe my graphics card doesn't have a sensor for that?

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

hmm. Your voltage controller might not be supported by gpuz. Try Hwinfo.

Hwinfo only shows "GPU Thermal Diode" like AIDA64 does.

Is 1.375V really that much? Because it's just 125mV more than Stock. And a GPU Temp of <75°C while stress testing / gaming isnt too high, isn't it?

Don't know. My snooping around when i had that 390x shows me that if you don't control your vrm temps while pushing loads of voltage through it. You're gonna see black screen issues. And that people don't generally go above 1.3v on air.

Oh, then I think 1.375V is really a bit much on air cooling :$

I got a "good" value now, 1120Mhz stable at 1.331Volts, it's just 12% OC but atleast no errors in Tomb Raider, GTA V, 3DMark or anything else. And the temps are not that bad for air cooling too (Idle : 34°C, Load: 73°C).

Thanks for your help :)
