I am currently having a hard time focusing on my work so I've decided to build a new system and have a dedicated work space/system that is free of distractions (e.g. no games and an isolated location within the house). I am having trouble between deciding to build a new gaming rig or workstation as I currently use my sig rig for work and play.  So here is the dilemma, do I use my current rig strictly as a workstation and build a system for gaming or do the opposite.

I am kinda leaning towards an i5 6600k paired with a GTX 1080, thoughts?

CPU: Intel i7 - 5820k @ 4.5GHz, Cooler: Corsair H80i, Motherboard: MSI X99S Gaming 7, RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 2666MHz CL16,

Um, why not neither? no reason to build a lesser PC

just get a pluggables USB 3.1 type C dock that you can hook up 3 displays to and run it to another room/area? that way you get the full power PC but can set up a dedicated monitor set up

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

^ looks like a good idea, never seen it before. If you're set on building a new system, use your current for work, because if you have to build another work PC it will probably have either a 6700K or another 6 core chip :P aka the same system

[edit] also, how did you get your 5820K to 4.5GHz on a 120mm cooler? temps?

That's an option but that doesn't eliminate the distractions on my primary system. It's really about keeping non work related items out of site out of mind. That would put me in a different space so that I am not being bothered by family or what not but that doesn't help the fact that my system is both work a play. Too many distractions on the system it self that are still necessary so I can't simply ditch them.

Also that solution requires me to run a cable between rooms which really isn't all that possible since they're going to be separated by different floors and many walls so wiring that would require me to rip and tear drywall for a clean installation. The room I am also going to be using also has the capability to be easily wired for 10Gbps connection between my WS and server.

Not so much worried about a specific build as I am more than capable of doing that my self, but if you really want to configure something lets say approximately 2500 $CAD. Software development involving computer graphics and simulation using various graphics API's as well CUDA, 3D modelling, sculpting, animation and rendering as well. Peripherals and monitor(s) have additional budget.

I am kinda leaning towards building a dedicated gaming system because as you said I would be putting in at least a 6 core. ( I am actually considering Xeon options from ebay if I go for the WS route.)

1080's bottleneck with a i5 regardless the clock or core count

if the system is designed for gaming and nothing else a 1070 will do it

for a work station maybe start at my personal build, http://au.pcpartpicker.com/user/samiscool24/saved/GXd323

i worked as a video editor for some time to make extra money, i don't anymore but it's still a good place to look

Then I don't know just toss in an i7 6700 and a $200 GPU if you're only going to be  gaming at 1080p with the secondary rig

I'd suggest keeping your current system as a workstation, given the CPU, amount of RAM, etc.

For gaming, I'd suggest an i5-6xxx paired with a GTX-1060 (1080p) or GTX-1070 (1440p). You really only need a 1080 if you are wanting to game at 4K.

Or, to keep costs down, get a cheap graphics card such as an R9 470 or GTX-1050 for the workstation and use the 980 in the new rig.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

i5-6600, 16Gigs, ITX Corsair 250D, R9 390, 120Gig M.2 boot, 500Gig SATA SSD, no HDD
