Although WiFi is slower, its not that much slower. My Wireless N WiFi card for my desktop was getting 90/12 which is what we are subscribe to. The OP might have a shitty WIFI card, or I have heard that some laptops that are built with Aluminum could cause reception issues.

To further add, my sister had a single band Wireless N card in her laptop. I got her upgraded with a wireless AC adapter. She said speeds and range improved. Depending on the laptop manufacture the OP could find a list of internal adapters that could be compatible. Thats if the OP is going to tear the machine down himself. If not just by a USB dongle, I would suggest one with an External Antenna. I personally dont have any suggestions. As Im not a big fan of USB adapters.
