i currently have an old rig lying in the room, it has a 2nd gen intel processor, the core 2 duo E7400 2.8Ghz processor. i am just wondering what gpu i should get without it being bottle-necked by the cpu?

Yea, but its gonna preform about the same and cost about 2.5 as much. A 460 is worth more that that whole system.

I would recommend defining your budget, figuring out what you want your computer to be able to do, and go from there. It may not be a terrible idea to get a 460 now, or maybe something even a bit stronger (even though you're not really going to be able to benefit from all it can provide) and then in 6 months or a year you buy a CPU/motherboard/RAM (you can get that combo for 200 bucks or less brand new, and these are decently powerful components: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/NcFTLk)

if you do that, you're left with a reasonably powerful computer that can handle pretty much anything you want to throw at it, and an overall cost of around 400-ish dollars spread over time so you don't really feel like you take the hit. then from there you continue that cycle of upgrade. GPU/CPU/GPU/CPU (you won't need a new motherboard or RAM for a while since there are TONS of good upgrades on the same socket/motherboard to go to. Don't have 200 bucks all at once? you can do the same thing with this for about 150 http://pcpartpicker.com/list/fhC3TW

It all depends on what you want your computer to do, and how much money you have available to do it... but all too often people buy for "now" and end up spending WAYY more money on much inferior machines simply because they do not plan their purchases ahead of time. You also may want to hit up the used market. You can probably get some pretty good prices on some fairly decent hardware if you're patient enough.

Do you have a set budget? if you absolutely need a GPU now, I would recommend buying the best one you can afford (if that is ~150 i would say get a GTX 1050 when it is released in a few weeks, assuming you can actually get them at that price). if that is closer to ~250, I would say get a GTX 1060 6GB, even though these GPU's are way overkill for what your current system can handle (be sure to check the PSU in your system to ensure they can handle such GPU's first, or you may need to include such things into your "gpu budget"). then when you have additional funds, you sink them into the cpu/motherboard/RAM upgrade I mentioned earlier (I really recommend stretching for the i3 if you can afford it. its quite a bit better than the G4400).

But even if you can stretch that out over time you're still looking at 400-500 bucks which I understand not everyone can afford. if I knew exactly how much you were looking to spend I could better recommend something for your exact needs. it would also be helpful to know what you expect out of the computer (do you plan on doing AAA gaming? light internet browsing or watching netflix?) as that can drastically affect the level of hardware that you actually require.

okay....if you don't have a budget, then how about a purpose? right now I'm kind of in the area of "how do i make this computer better" without really knowing what you expect it to do. my current recommendations would make no sense if you're just going to use it as a HTPC. or as a NAS. or as a folding farm. or a whole bunch of other purposes.

hmm.. the purpose would be running simple task like browsing typing on word etc. maybe some light gaming, i play games like paladin and i dont plan to play direct x12 stuff on this rig this will be mainly used as a secondary system.

If you plan on doing light MOBA gaming and whatnot (not really sure what Paladin is) my recommendation would be to get an i3 6100 and just run everything off of the iGPU. that should give you a passable gaming experience, excellent windows navigation and browsing and whatnot, as well as not being terribly expensive. You could then look for a decent, cheap, used GPU for 100 bucks or less and throw it in there if you find your system lacking in some way. I don't really recommend the G4400 for this purpose though as its IGPU is weaker than the i3 6100's. if you really need to pinch your pennies you could take a look at the G4500 (its an upgraded G4400 with faster clock and the same IGPU as the i3 6100). You might also consider an AMD APU, but i've never investigated those and have no idea how they stack up to the HD530 (the GPU inside the i3 6100)

Something to note with the HD530. its not a super strong GPU. You're going to be playing your games on low-medium settings a lot of the time (although it will greatly depend on the game). I've played WoW 25man mythic raids with 60fps capped on the HD530 (on low settings of course, but it was very playable). I've played Tomb Raider, Division, and a whole bunch of AAA titles with great success on the HD530, but again on low settings. I've also played games like SC II on medium settings. LoL on max settings. it all depends on the requirements of the game.

Keep in mind that your VRAM when using an iGPU comes out of your system memory, so having at least 8GB is strongly recommended.
