GTX 1080 Worth it?

Unnamed RedShirt

So I recently built a new computer and need a GPU for it. I'm wanting to get an ultra wide screen 1080p monitor. I was going to put in a 1070 and was wondering if there's any noticeable difference with a 1080 at this resolution, and if so, if it's worth the extra price.

My RX480 gets 60FPS+ at 2560x1080p.

A GTX1060 would be good enough and a GTX 1070 is a little overkill for that res

I wasn't sure if the Ultra wide screen taking a few pixels on the side would make a difference.

Nope.  I'm using a 980 Ti on a 1440p monitor with absolutely no issue.  I play every game on ultra over 100 fps (Overwatch, Rainbow Six Siege, Forza Horizon 3, The Division).

The 1070 is pretty comparable to the 980 Ti.  The ultrawide 1080p monitor will have fewer pixels to render than a standard 1440p monitor.  Save your money.

I heard it goes

1060 for 1080p

1070 for 1440p

1080 for high end 1440p and even some 4k.

Even so, the 1070 would be more than enough, and the 1060 would likely struggle a bit more. Not sure if there's a sweet spot.

GTX 1070 is still good for 3440 x 1440. You can tweak (set it to the 2nd / 3rd highest setting) some of the image quality options to get more FPS. But if you can afford a GTX 1080, go for it. There is no such thing as overkill. Games get more demanding each year.

GTX 1060 is only good for 1920 x 1080 or 2560 x 1080 when using maximum settings

k...

OP said "ultrawide 1080p" to me that means an ultrawide 2560x1080

i merely agreed with him that the 1070 is the right card

the gtx 1080 would be for the larger ultrawide that run at 3440x1440

One thing I know for certain is that the GTX 1080 would be a waste of your money for these requirements.

If the assumption is that games 2 to 3 years from now won't be more demanding, yes, GTX 1080 is a waste of money for 2560 x 1080
