is there any difference in specs between the original PS VITA and the slim version?

I think the main difference is that the PS Vita had an OLED screen and the slim a less expensive LCD screen.

There were claims it would have about 70% more battery life too.

 

You should look up a comparison video on this subject, that will tell you all the differences.

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

It has a few cosmetic changes.  Slim went micro-usb for charging/data vs the older proprietary cable.  Screen is now a TN panel instead of OLED.  A few minor redesigns on the front buttons, and slightly smaller touch pad on the back.  Longer battery life is included as well.  I'd recommend the Slim.  The USB charger along with better battery life make it a good purchase.  I've had no complaints about the screen.
