Someone gave a Dell Dimension 8200 with no hard drive and a dead clock battery. I installed a new clock battery and a hard drive and installed Windows XP (Yes XP is outdated, but the original owner had a box of CDs that came with the computer including a XP CD and I didn't feel like buying a copy of Windows 7 and I didn't want Linux on this machine as I wanted this to be my XP gaming machine even thought new Core 2 Duo would be better, I'm aware of emulators for Linux but I just wanted Windows on this machine). I also upgraded from 512MBs of RAM to 1GB for about $20 (I'll max it out at 2GBs later). I am looking for a CPU as it has it's stock 2.4GHz 533MHz FSB Intel Pentium 4 CPU. I think since socket 478 Pentium 4s are so cheap I might as well upgrade it to something better. I believe the computer has the 850E chipset since it has a stock 533MHZ FSB CPU and it was shipped in September of 2002 so it was probably built in August of 2002. I did upgrade to the A09 BIOS with should be the latest BIOS for the 8200. What do you think is the best supported CPU for this computer? And does it support hyper threading?

What are you going to use the PC for? Because 1 core is not at all going to be enough for any modern tasks and at max you can get a 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo for in it. I just think it is to old of an architecture to upgrade unless you are just going to be doing web browsing.

I didn't realize that, thanks for clarifying for me.

Well, other than the mobile ones, which you can't use.
