I have a gigabyte GA-H170 (http://www.gigabyte.co.nz/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5522#ov) that supports crossfire. I'm curious as to whether it's possible to mod, hack or something the bios/mb to support sli? I know it used to be possible, not sure it it's still a thing. I have been looking into getting a crossfire setup, but I already have a Nvidia gpu, and a mate is selling the exact same one.

Nope im 99% thats not possible

What card do you have? SLI is often not worth it, you are probably best just going for a new card

Doesnt an SLI supported mobos have special CHIP provided by Nvidia? something similar to the G-sync monitors (they also have a module provided by nvidia)

Not possible, on that board the second slot is most likely only pcie 3.0 x4, and SLI requires at least pcie x8.

Only z170 boards have SLI support.

no, they just need to have two PCIE X16 slot that can run at X16 speed...OP motherboard the second slot is only X4 speed...so it will work with crossfire but should only be used with lower end AMD cards.

There is more to it then that, they have to be running at least at x8 speed, and there is something in the bios which will certify that the board supports SLI which the drivers will check for. The mod the OP is talking about is flashing the bios from a SLI certified board onto a non-certified board so that the certification carries over to the board.

my post was already edited after you quoted it...and all boards runing pcie slots at x8/x8 will have SLI support in the bios out of the box.

Just because a board has x8/x8 doesn't mean it supports SLI, many server/workstation board will not support SLI, or even crossfire because they lack whatever is in the bios to enable it.

http://www.tweaktown.com/news/11708/sneaky_trick_enables_sli_on_non_sli_motherboard/index.html

This article shows that if you have a  board that doesn't support SLI, to get SLI to work the bios needs to be flashed with one that has the certification in order for SLI to work, proving that there is something in the bios which is needed for SLI support.
