Can you salvage HDDs from old sky boxes?

Craigathorn

Just a random question, been having a bit of a clear out and found like 3 sky boxes with pretty big HDD

was wondering if you could salvage them and format them to work in the PC? And if so are they as good as normal HDD/is it an easy enough process to do?

would be a shame to see them go to waste, and the HDD would be worth more than what I'd get for selling the boxes as they are...

Cheers dude, seems a bit dated though as I doubt a recent sky box would use an ide drive.. surely?

In the UK then yes its possible, I have done it many times and they have ran for ages without issues.

Should be no problems, unless they are soldered in, but I doubt it would be as it'd make repairs painful. Usually they would be just normal SATA drives, can't remember whether 2.5 or 3.5" though.

It's about 80/20 for me remembering to quote people... even though I myself don't see posts unless I'm quoted, lol... I used to leave it that I got notifications for everything I made a comment in, but the notifications were crazy, so went for the no notifications unless I am the thread owner.

Just in case you were all wondering, it took me that long to rip the box apart and get the HDD out.

It normally ends up in bloodshed and tears cos you either have to fight to get the correct torx screw with the hole in it or rip the case apart and manage to cut all of your fingers lol
